Very soft and dubious penalty, and a clear indication of why the VAR is not needed in Football.

Penalty shoot-out starts a little early.

Disagree. He clearly didn't get a boot on the ball and tripped the striker. That's a penalty all week.
And Australia's reply: WTF was the defender thinking? Anyway 1-all and all to play for.

Yeah, that was madness - I thought it was only supposed to be used if the ref had missed someone clearly getting scythed in half or something. No way you can make a clear judgement in that case when the defender's got a bit of the ball first...
Anyway, justice is served!

Ref was right there, made an instant call. VAR wasn’t needed. Had it been on the halfway line, nothing would’ve happened. It’s the biggest issue in football (besides the corruption) - how differently the game is refereed in the 18 years boxes.

Why have FIFA behaved like they are the first sport to introduce football refs? They could easily have looked at rugby for advice on how to implement it and the majority of the issues we constantly see wouldn't exist. It's certainly not perfect in rugby, but watching this shite makes me far happier about it.
For the record, I'm pretty sure the Aussie gets a touch. One angle in particular appears to show it.

Bit of luck for the 2nd goal.... France not so impressive tbh.

That should do it for France. 2-1 up. Really, have looked more dangerous going forward than Australia and could have scored at least 2 more with a bit of polish. Apart from that one really good chance, Australia's attacking highlights have been few and far between. The french keeper has rarely been needed.

Lawro really is a boring bastard. He was complaining about them showing the viewers the Goal-line technology decision video for the Pogba goal saying it was completely obvious - even though it was only a legal goal by about an inch.

To be fair, they're the only sport to have introduced football refs But yeah, if the ref has ran up to look at the footage but not bothered waiting for the angle which clearly shows the touch then what's the point? It becomes no better than just going with his view on the pitch...

There was no angle that clearly showed a touch. There was one angle that didn't clearly show he hadn't touched it. He got the call right. Now whether we should have VAR at all is a better question.

Looked like it could have been a deliberate trip.

The very parochial Australian comnentators couldn't find a touch. Fair to say there wasn't one there.

Socceroos were quite good till 80 mins....I kind of feel the first goal for France was not so deserved. Last 10 mins France did look better and Aussie defence did look a bit shaky. Still believe Australia deserved to walk away with a draw.

Looked like it could have been a deliberate trip. Maybe - but then he did get a touch on the ball. Now if he'd got a stronger touch and knocked the ball miles away and THEN Griezmann went down there'd be no debate - everyone would be saying fantastic tackle! If it's in the process of the same tackle I don't think you can penalise the defender. But then that's just my opinion but I think the point is that it's not really unambiguous enough to use the VAR to overrule the on field judgement.
