I thought he got a slight touch on the ball but he brought down Griezmann as well. Doesn't that make in a penalty? Looked like it could have been a deliberate trip. Maybe - but then he did get a touch on the ball. Now if he'd got a stronger touch and knocked the ball miles away and THEN Griezmann went down there'd be no debate - everyone would be saying fantastic tackle! If it's in the process of the same tackle I don't think you can penalise the defender. But then that's just my opinion but I think the point is that it's not really unambiguous enough to use the VAR to overrule the on field judgement. Apparently VAR was still looked at on Australia's penalty (the handball) even though the ref. had no doubts about it. That's what the BBC commentary team claimed anyway.

The very parochial Australian comnentators couldn't find a touch. Fair to say there wasn't one there. Hard to agree when we've seen a replay over and over which shows a touch.

Can't comment on whst I haven't seen. Every replay they showed it pretty clear he hadn't touched the ball.

It’s a bit irrelevant whether Risdon gets a touch - Griezemann got a touch after that and was then clipped. I think the ball was clearly gone by then though, and Griezemann felt a touch and went down like a sniper shot him. If the exact same thing happens on the halfway line - play on. And again, VAR wouldn’t intervene. It’s insanity.....

I think the penalty was ok, Griezmann was in full speed and the other guy made him fall. That's it.

Soccer Guy's match report...
"Australian Soccer Club athletes go tell the referee what a douchebag he is for giving a deathstrike to France Soccer Club. Greaseman inserts the deathstrike, and although the Australian guys got a PK of their own real quick, the referee failed to produce the major felony card for Umtitty's hand felony. Jedi Nak made the strike back, but a Rick O'Shead goalshot gave the Cocks the victory points"

France play quite conservative under Didier Deschamps. Reminds me of Brazil under Carlos Dunga.

Lawro really is a boring bastard. He was complaining about them showing the viewers the Goal-line technology decision video for the Pogba goal saying it was completely obvious - even though it was only a legal goal by about an inch. Show Lawro the red card and get somebody interesting inside the BBC commentary box.

All in all - Australia a touch unlucky to not get a draw, France a touch lucky to get a win. Based on what Spain and Portugal have produced, France isn’t winning anything past the 2nd Round. Aside from Kante, they have lots of flash but very little real grunt and substance. For all their wizardry, even Brazil have produced blokes wearing 3,4,5 and/or 6 who can muscle and hustle with the best of them. France simply doesn’t have it. If they aren’t bossing Australia around, they aren’t bossing anyone else really.....

Not a good performance from France but really, if one of their defenders hadn't had a brain explosion, Soceroos don't score at all and it's a 2-nil win. Bit of polish going forward and it could have been a 4 goal rout. Result said a lot more about France than it did our boys. We hung in, that's about it. All the turnovers in the middle, not to mention the back third: a good side would have been filling their boots. France obviously aren't that.

France got a bit lucky, but did ultimately deserve the win. A shame for Australia, it would have been quite the upset.
