I watched it in December so I was ahead of the hate it's getting now by some and I absolutely loved it. This or Arrival is my favorite movie from 2016.

Loved it. I was a little uneasy in the beginning bc the opening number was just so unnecessary I thought... but I just loved the story and the chemistry between Ryan and Emma and the music. I downloaded the soundtrack the next day and I can't stop humming the songs.

It's OK. I'm an older guy and have seen classic Gene Kelly/Debbie Reynolds and Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers musicals. Ryan Gosling is uneven. Emma Stone is a little better.
LLL is a nostalgia trip. The story is an old film standard. I liked the Jazz. The dancing in the stars was good. The ending helped.
I think better movies came out this year but LLL will probably get the best picture/actress Oscars.

I've watched it a few times and it never fails to underwhelm me. Emma Stone is "okay" but the acting required of her is fitting for any soap opera. Ryan Gosling is lousy as usual. Someone called him the new Steve McQueen. I call him the new Carey Elwes and hope he disappears as quickly. So pissed he's going to ruin the new Bladerunner, but if you ever needed a boring, opaque, stoic actor for a boring, opaque, stoic film -- he's your man. I won't mention La La Land's lousy songs, because it's been said a thousand times before.

The opening number is great, then it slowly goes downhill--The songs were all bland, Stone and Gosling can not sing or dance, the movie is too long, the choreography is good

Good but deeply flawed- the ending was a cop-out, the diverging "paths" should have been they stay together and are poor, or split but become successful. Him showing up to drive her to the audition and she becomes famous anyway, and they're apart, was bullshit, and the director clearly just wanted you to think his ending of the "road not taken" was bittersweet when he didn't go the whole way.

Thought it was boring. The songs were mostly tedious - couple of weeks on and I can't remember a single one of them. The ending made the rest of the film pointless.
I am mystified why people like it so much. I can see somebody might think it's a good movie, but people talk as if it's this amazing thing that's the best movie in decades and should win all the oscars. Just no.

Saw it a few times and I thought it was a great rewatch. Wasn't my favorite movie of the year, but was easily in my top 10

The whole film had a clear crisp sound that really gave the songs a big boost. It's been compared to Le Miz, but I think Victor Hugo had a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

I enjoyed it a lot, but I don't know if I can say I "loved" it. I consider it the best movie of 2016 but that's largely because it was a weak year for film. I liked the songs and I really liked the opening musical number. The cinematography/editing were both good, and I also liked the film's colorful look. The ending was heartbreaking. Anybody who's ever been in a "starcrossed lovers" situation can relate. I would have to agree though that both Stone and Gosling did poorly in their singing and dancing.

7/10. A good film but totally overhyped. The first 20 minutes are brilliant, some great tracking shots and i think Stone is brilliant.
Ryan Gosling is just okay-reminds me more and more of Nicholas Cage.
The middle bit was rushed through-the break up was dealt with far too quickly - i felt no tension/anger/any emotions at all. Much more should have been made of this-think Star is Born-as this is the crux of the films surely?
The ending was too like Allen's Cafe Society for my liking. I think if it had been released 60 years ago it would be forgotten amidst the great musicals released in the golden age of musicals. It is a novelty film a bit like the Artist was when it was re leased.

It is a novelty film a bit like the Artist was when it was re leased. I agree with you on that. That was the first movie I thought of once it started garnering all the praise and nominations. Hollywood seems to love nostalgia about itself, and since so many of the executive fat-cats who run that town are in their late-50s and 60s now, it seems like a warp-speed track to awards if you make any kind of movie hearkening back to the glittering of image of Hollywood that existed when they were young. Nostalgia's a hell of a drug. I thought it was over-hyped too, and I guess I set myself up for disappointment because I thought it was going to be something entirely different than it was when I first started reading about its production a couple of years ago. I guess I thought it was going to be grittier than it was (I hate using that word, but I can't think of a better descriptor right now). I thought it was going to be more of a stark contrast between what living in Hollywood is really like, set against the constant fantasies people have about what life *could* be like. The people who really do watch movies and think living life that way is really possible, as if fantasies could turn to reality if you just work hard enough. Meanwhile, even if you do achieve success in that town, it's just never going to feel like a movie feels. Of course they still used that element as the crux of the storytelling, but it still felt too pretty and sanitized to me. It didn't feel like watching real people experiencing life in Hollywood, I was constantly aware that I was watching movie stars pretending to be people who wanted to be movie stars (and musicians/club owners). It just didn't gel for me, personally. Again, though, a lot of that was probably my own fault for developing expectations too soon. I didn't think the music was so great, either. It wasn't terrible or anything, but it felt kind of forced, like they were trying too hard to mimic old Hollywood (I kept thinking Trey Parker could have done a fantastic set of songs with his eyes closed). Didn't think it was a 'bad' movie, just didn't think it was great. I didn't think 'The Artist' was so great either. I enjoyed it very much, but I still think it's pretty overrated. I'm a cynical old bat, though, especially toward celebrations of Hollywood. **drinks bottle of Ensure and works on crossword puzzle**
