Is there anyone out there that likes "Superman III"?
I'll just say, I prefer the Christoper Reeve films in order.
It's basically "The Richard Pryor Show" co-starring Superman...
...and the campy jokes and tone brought to life by director Richard Lester and writers David and Leslie Newman completely torpedo all that Superman is all about.
I think these TWO things are at the heart of matter.
They, all by themselves, don't really make THIS particular movie... bad...
The movie that was made was not... "Superman III"! What was made, was... "Superman MEETS Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor)".
Has any "MEETS" movie in history, ever really been serious? Not really, No!
Now, watch the movie again.
Do we see Superman singing and dancing and telling jokes?
No, we do not.! Even with Richard Lester's tendency for constant comedy... Superman is still the same Superman we saw in the two previous films. Being Heroic and Saving People... Even "Evil Superman" is still more serious than Lex Luthor was in the first movie!
As most of us have concluded... RULE #1: A Superman movie should never be a Comedy! This was the big mistake of the film makers.
When people praise any parts of this movie, it is almost always the parts without "Gus Gorman" in them.
And, sadly, if it were possible to edit out the "Gus Gorman Show", I think most of us would agree that the movie is actually very interesting and very enjoyable!
The trick to watching this movie, now, is IF... and that is a big IF... you can leave the hatred for those ideas behind, when watching the film.
Some of us can... Some of us can't! I think that speaks more about the viewer, than the movie...
Interestingly, even the "Gus Gorman Show" is pretty mild, compared to other Richard Pryor movies... and I even do find Richard Lester's comedy, funny, just by itself.
It's just that... none of it... belongs in a Superman movie.
As for Superman IV: The Quest For Peace... It was a bad story, and the special effects were the worst of all the films up to that point.
Except for watching Christopher Reeve playing Clark Kent/Superman one more time, as well as, having those great scenes with Lois Lane... I find little about that film to be interested in. (I also did like the Smallville Kent Farm Scene with the family friend wanting to buy the farm.)
And yes, that laser vision rebuilding the wall thing, was the dumbest thing ever.
