I'm four episodes in. But I'm a little confused on the backstory and some of the relationships... Its implied that the creepy white haired dude is the "rightful heir" to the throne. But they make similar references to Ned Stark's father being assassinated as well. Obviously I'm misinterpreting something here. Which one was king? And who was the current king before he took the throne? Also, the blonde family... Who are they exactly? The king is married to one of them, but he seems to hate the others. And who is the guy having the affair with the queen? Is that her brother? He seems like he's part of the same family... This was probably all explained. It was pretty late when I saw the first two episodes and I probably spaced during some of the exposition. Any hardcore fans care to help me out here? Aj_June ? Nice to see you again, Blue one! I have an exam on 23rd June but after that I am going to repeat watching GOT myself so we can discuss things after each episodes.
For your question I will say this:
About 15 years before the show began there was a power conflict in Westeros and during that the Targaryen dynasty (which had been the ruling dynasty for over 300 years) was thrown away. Stark, Arryns, Lannister and Baratheon families played main roles in overthrowing the rule of Targaryen dynasty. The Targaryen dynasty still has two members alive. The rest were butchered by the rebels. The surviving members are Daenerys and her brother Viserys Targaryen. Both are kids of former Targaryen king who was killed.
Yes, the creepy white haired dude is indeed the rightful heir to the throne. Ned Stark's father was executed by the last Targaryen ruler. That was possibly the biggest reason that led to the rebellion (which has not been shown on the show).
They are the Lannisters ( Leo of Red Keep is their representative here). Lannisters are an old house. They were the rulers of western part of Westeros before Targaryen dynasty unified the the continent under one rule.
For more knowledge I will reveal this information without committing any spoilers.
The planet Westeros & surrounding Islands were ruled by 7 families for 1000s of years. The Starks ruled the north. The Martells ruled the south. The Lannisters ruled the west. The Arryns ruled the east and the Greyjoys ruled the Iron islands. The Baratheons and Tyrells are also among big houses but they were traditionally not the kings of their regions. 300 years before the show begins an outsider from the continent of Essos attacked the Westeros and unified the whole planet under their rule. 20 years before the show begins that Targaryen family is overthrown in a rebellion led by Lord Stark, current king Robert Baratheon and the grandfather of that white haired dude (queen's father).
Please feel free to ask any questions and very soon I will start repeat watching it. Enjoy the show!

It has been awhile since I saw season one ( years ) but I will give this a shot 1) white haired dude is son of white haired king, who was killed and overthrown. So, yes he is the heir. 2) the big fat guy king took over after that 3) he is married to the Lannister sister 4) yes the brother and sister are lovers and even have children together the first few seasons are pretty dense and dialogue heavy, so as others said, you might have to pay close attention, or even watch it twice the later seasons move along ( too ) briskly, like an action film

Thanks Aj_June and _ ! I think I'll rewatch the first episode. I pretty much have it all straight now, I think. It was mainly some dialogue in episode three about Ned's father being killed in the throne room that threw me. But now I get it.

1) white haired dude is son of white haired king, who was killed and overthrown. So, yes he is the heir. He is just as legitimate to rule the Seven Kingdom as Queen Elizabeth to rule Northern America. Not saying it would be a bad idea, though (that with Northern America).

It's funny you say that, I was careful to say he was "the heir", and not say "the rightful ruler" or anything like that.

Now, a point can be made he ought to have been made king under regency of those who fought his father but this is a lofty hope and I find it difficult to come up with historical examples of such a thing. Maybe Louis IV of France is a passable equivalent.

I mean how many episodes per week? Please do not hesitate to ask whatever question you may feel like asking. It is not an easy show to follow because there are way too many characters and many plots are going on simultaneously.
My favourite characters are Arya Stark and Lord Stannis Baratheon. I believe Stannis Baratheon might not have entered the show yet.

I'm watching through it a lot slower than I'd like to right now. Haven't been able to watch an episode since Sunday. I'm also watching a lot of Curb Your Enthusiasm at the same time, because I've got HBO for only three months and I wanna get a good sampling of the shows. I'll have some time later in the week to binge some GoT though! My favorite characters are Ned Stark and Peter Dinklage (forgot his character name). Great performances by two great actors!

Thanks! I hope I can finish at least a few seasons before my HBO supscription runs out... You can check your local library after it does. Most libraries carry DVD's now and probably have GOT in their systems.
