I think it wouldn't have hurt.

I like the movie as is with a bunch of gruff dudes. I suppose one of the supporting characters could have been female without changing anything (Alien was written to be an all male cast as well), but I wouldn't want the plot bogged down with sexual tension or some Ripley wannabe, as in MEW's character in the "prequel".

No. Doesn’t need it and it was pretty inaccurate at the time for women to be involved in such scientific expeditions. Much more believable to have an all male crew.
Plus could you imagine how much those guys would’ve fawned over Mary Elizabeth Winstead?

That possibly could have made some interesting scenes like suppose the thing took the woman's form to seduce the characters. But it'd be a tad retrograde, and I'm sure radical feminists would flip their shit over it.

I'm not even talking about sexual tension, just to break up the monotony. I do think it works as is, but I also think it would have worked with a minor female character. And I like M.E.W. in The Thing, but that has a lot to do with her being hot as hell. Surprised the ice doesn't melt around her.

The Thing itself could have been a female, or the alien equivilent.

No, I'm fine with the all-male cast.
