Wouldn't you say that the 90's had better films?

Well they're not as overrun with commercialism, visual effects, etc. like the films of today in terms of blockbusters.

I think there are films from every decade that prove how that decade really lived or thought.

some were far fetched [think of most roles Katherine Hepburn had in films] and some were real in terms of milk men and having things delivered to the house.


the nineties were homage to spectacular movies like goodfellas and titanic, but we also had pieces of shit like the American pie and Spice world.

Every decade had winners and losers but I just think that as a whole "good" or "great" films have been getting harder to find as the years pass by.

However, from another point of view, unless CGI gets massively better 20 years from now, I think the superhero films will remain nostalgic for a whole generation of people (although not me) and will be looked on fondly. So if you came from that state of mind really enjoying those films, the 2000's to 2010's will be one of the greatest eras of film making...

From yet another point of view though, how many people are going to be looking for a copy of something like Moonlight 20 years ago like folks do with the Godfather films or Apocalypse Now, or as a '90s example, Saving Private Ryan?

I would say..... we had more up and coming directors from the 90s to early 2000s, like a Tarantino, PTA, Fincher, Bay (to an extent), Wachowskis, Snyder (to an extent), Nolan, directors who would make a film that clearly stated "this is mine" whether it was in structure, visuals, tone, script or all of the above.

I rank the decades like this OVERALL (this is well thought out for me)...

1)2000's (five 10/10, seven 9/10, fifteen solid 8/10, thirteen 7.5-8/10, twenty 7/10. total of 60 movies.)

2)1990's (one 10/10, five 9/10, nine solid 8/10, thirteen 7.5-8/10, ten 7/10. total of 38 movies.)

3)2010's (zero 10/10, three 9/10, three solid 8/10, eleven 7.5-8/10, thirty-one 7/10. total of 48 movies.)

4)1980's (zero 10/10, one 9/10, two solid 8/10, seven 7.5-8/10, twelve 7/10. total of 22 movies.)

5)1960's (three 10/10, one 9/10, zero solid 8/10, two 7.5-8/10, three 7/10. total of 9 movies.)

6)1970's (zero 10/10, zero 9/10, one solid 8/10, three 7.5-8/10, five 7/10. total of 9 movies.)


after those six decades things drop off a cliff. but I would put the 1940's in the 7th spot solely because it's the only decade pre-1960's that has one of my favorite movies. so basically the decades listed above make up for my top 186 movies out of the 187 total which, like I just mentioned, the 1940's has the only single movie pre-1960's.

NOTE: if things were closer using the method I did to judge the overall quality of the decades I had other ways to help narrow it down further.

since we are on the topic of 1990's vs 2010's, ill say this about those two decades for me (and the fact those two happen to be the closest to swapping with each other in overall rank)...

while the 2010's makes up a higher volume of my favorite movies than the 1990's, I ultimately give the 1990's edge over the 2010's because of the eleven movie difference in my 8's and higher range makes me favor the 1990's overall even though the 1990's is behind by ten movies in total favorite movie count.

but with that said (in terms of 1990's vs 2010's)... we still have a good chunk of 2018 and all of 2019 to go and depending on how that plays out for me I guess it could still be possible for the 2010's to take the overall edge over the 1990's. but to do that I think it would have to have some 7.5-8/10's and higher and a fair amount more of 7/10's to 'maybe' overtake the 1990's overall.

my guess is the 1990's will finish ahead of the 2010's when is all said and done. but it's not guaranteed to given I still feel there is a possibility the 2010's could come out ahead overall. like it's not out of the question the 2010's could overtake the 1990's with this last 1.5 years or so left of the 2010's decade but to do that I would have to have a fair amount of 7.5-8/10 or higher level movie or if that is lacking, I would have to get quite a few more 7/10's to tip the overall edge in 2010's favor.

I'd definitely rank the 1970's as one of the best decades if not the best.

The 60s were the best color decade for movies.
Most variety across many countries from Italy to Japan. It was probably the worst decade for the major studios as they were losing audiences to the indies.


The 70s saw Hollywood embracing B movies to attract audiences but this led to the shrinking of the marketplace (thanks Hollywood) but there was still a robust mid budget film both out of the major studios and foreign. But it was dying fast.

The 80s still had some indie companies like Band or Cannon. Mid budget films were still around.

The 90s--the death throes of traditional feature film. By the end of the decades trans-national corporations took over and it began to show in painful ways.
