0.5 points more is due because of paying homage to Mithunda. Makes the final rating 8.

For me, the best scene was when Vincent tries to threaten Ravi with a gun.

For me, the best scene was when Vincent tries to threaten Ravi with a gun. my favorite scenes were the ones with the bomb maker kochooti and the one where 10 ml thomas chettan and pepe invite ravi and rajan for a drink after the compromise.

and angamali diaries is a movie that is universally liked now. its such a guys movies. the characters are not ratting scumbags like in GOODFELLAS or murderous psychos like in GNAGS OF WASSEYPUR. they are just lovable amateur small time gangsters who do commit a murder once in a while. Yeah, that is a perfect description of the movie and the reason I liked it more than those movies.

"what did you guys think about the ending?"
I think Pepe was somewhat of a hypocrite. He was glad to be unscathed and to be in Dubai. He was more middle class than he gave himself credit. He was just reminiscing for old times sake. He was glad to be "free" in Dubai, in the lap f comparative affluence and a somewhat false sense of safety. He probably considered himself to be better than scum like Rajan and Ravi. Which he was anyway.

what did you guys think about the ending? To me, the final bit with him on the crane felt like it was about how men lose contact with their friends as they age and find themselves alone except for their family. But he seemed pretty happy to be up there so maybe that wasn't it.

Yeah, I liked that the lead character is neither a particularly likeable character or even genuine as opposed to the rest of the cast. If the movie was all about him then this would have been yet another of those shitty new-gen flicks. All this hype is making me want to watch it again today. Downloading the BR version atm.

Which he was anyway. hmmm. but nowhere in the film is pepe shown to be middle class. in fact, he is the right at the forefront of the fights. he is the one who chases maramkothi sijo (the guy who stabs and kills appani ravi) in the end. he chases sijo despite knowing that its only a matter of time before he leaves for dubai to join his wife. so he puts his neck on the line for his friends. and he is the one who throws the bomb and kills the guy in the rubber plantation. if anything, he is more impulsive than the others.

Yeah, he was more likeable than the others. So were some of his gang, like elder guy who settled matters and the guy who wed the constable.
Pepe was sure impulsive and he was always there for his friends. But in the end, he did flee Angamalai cause he knew that eventually, his volatile friends and enemies might turn him into more of a rustic hooligan indulging in in violence on a day to day basis.
I won't term him as middle class, but he was more so than most others in his circle.

Watched it again and I guess Pepe was just a hothead. One of our neighbours was actually similar to the character; pretty active and popular but had stabbed a guy to death when he was younger and they shushed up the case.
I think I like this movie more than City of God coz I can relate to the characters in this movie better. Also, Malayalam movies seem to have an obsession with food lately and watching the characters eat makes me miss it. Tried watching Trainspotting 2 after it but it seemed too static coming after this movie.

Yeah, that was definitely when it started. The romance part of Salt n Pepper was unbearably cringey, otherwise I would have liked that movie.

BABURAJ was pretty good in it. i consider it to be the film that brought about a renaissance after a decade and a half of mammooty, mohanlal, sureshgopi and dileep competing with each other to act in crappy films, aided by the likes of shaji kailas and renji panicker and a host of other mornic writers and directors.
