I go mostly for work, and it is every other day and during regular working days and work hours for most people, so I go mostly alone. And it also happens sometimes that I either have the theatre to myself or there is less than five of us. I usually love it, the only time i really regretted being the only person in the movie theater was when I was watching Hereditary. I kept looking around a lot, being scared of every little noise or shadow I felt I heard/saw.
Over time I became to enjoy going to the theatre alone a bit more than with other people, but I agree the conversation afterwards is the best part so I go with others as well when I can.

Even if you're alone, you have stuff to keep you occupied in the theater like using your phone or watching the trivia/preview stuff that plays on screen before the trailers. using your phone? forgive me if i kill you in your theater seat.

Not during the show. I mean like as you're waiting for the trailers to start and the lights are still up.

I don't mind seeing a movie on my own, but if the theater's packed I prefer having a companion.

thx. it has it perks but it also means you see a lot of shitty movies You never know until you go. true, but not always. sometimes you totally do. like I knew going in that Superfly was going to be bad. Just didnt know it was going to be That bad. Or now I am supposed to write an article about Gotti and I am dreading it. There have been times when I was pleasantly surprised though. Life of party, Overboard and I feel Pretty were all better than I expected. but then you go and see a movie you didnt expect much of at all, and are blown away, like yesterday when I saw The miseducation of Cameron Post. The part that gets in the way of just enjoying the movie is that sometimes you need to take notes while watching. And that sux. Like when watching Ready Player One or Infinity War I had maybe two pages of notes. When i can i see the movie twice before I write the review, but I dont always make it.

80% of the time yes.
I started early in my 20's when university schedule was all over the map & I chose to watch matinees as time filler & killer. Now friends with families & schedules still all over the map... it's a solo thing for me. If I want to watch a movie at home, do I have to wait until someone I know is available to come & watch with me?? lols to hold my hand???
I'll never understand why ppl are so hung up on this as a thing. Sitting in a quiet darkened room watching cinema... not a social affair in the least. Yet another societal norm ppl are afraid of upsetting. Girl I work with 'had to' wait 2 weeks to see Infinity War because she couldn't find ppl to go with. I feel sorry for ppl like that.

I go alone 90% of the time -- I enjoy it. I also go on trips alone -- no big deal.

I have no qualms about going alone. Yes, it's nice to have someone to chat with before and after the movie, but more often than not, I get tired of waiting for schedules to align and just *want* to see the freaking movie already. Life is too short.
I saw Hereditary in a theater last week with one other loner sitting a few rows behind me. Really added to the atmosphere.

i've done it once, it's not that bad, but idk i like chatting about a movie with a friend afterwards rather than just going to the car and driving back home, if i want to watch a movie alone....idk i'd just stay at home.

the fun thing about seeing a movie with someone is that you can go to dinner with them afterwards and chat about it.
i saw ITonya in the theater by myself [because i was always pulling for her way back in the 90's] because the friend i wanted to see it with [and who had wanted to see it anyway or so i was led to believe] would constantly flake out. for literal months this girl could not get her shit together for 3 hours.
i actually had enough fun by myself [granted i was sitting in an all but empty theater] watching it.
another good thing about going to see a movie by yourself... if you are a foodie but self conscious about all the yummies you want, you have nothing to be ashamed of.
i hate going to the movies with my parents when my mother is with my father and me. he's cool with popcorn and soda but mom does the : TOO MUCH FAT/NITRATES/SUGAR! god. it's soda and popcorn. not lobster!

Alone or not, it doesn’t bother me. Probably going it alone in a fortnight’s time to see “Aliens”. Honestly it’s the cost that bothers me more than seeing a film by myself in the cinema.

That is so true. And after paying the outrageous cost of a movie ticket, we have to sit through a few commercials before the previews and movie. That's what really pisses me off.

Going to the movies with people is something "casual" movie goers do. They're not really going to see the movie, it's just another social event. Film fans go to see the movie, alone or otherwise.
I enjoy going with other people and I have a couple of friends who share my taste, but I'm more than happy to see a film by myself.

One time I went to the theater by myself. I got laughed at and popcorn thrown at me by a group of friends, a guy sitting next to me was getting a hj from his girlfriend who pointed at me and made the face Donald Sutherland makes at the end of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a family asked me if mine hated me, etc. Eventually a mob formed and chased me out of the theater before those commercials for lame TNT shows were even over. I explained the situation to the cashier and asked for a refund but they said "we don't give refunds to losers". It was awful.
