Thanks, Al! That was actually one of the first ones I recommended, but the OP said no. By the way, I've posted the link to the original post somewhere on this thread, right?

Hi Carl-- Just want to let you know that I asked the OP if it were Prescription Murder, and she said no... Oh, just saw that she responded to you herself on the other forum. I was going to recommend some pictures from the Dead Person Impersonation list to which you linked, but apparently it's a "no" to them too.

I just noticed that Takeshi-K and Mulva, who chimed in before to help with this question, have deleted their accounts. I'm sorry that they left. This is a bump more than anything, but I've recently reached out to a gentleman who wrote an encyclopedia on noir films, and he was unable to find anything. Another insoluble mystery (oh no!).

Oh, Lord. Why do I always end up with these apparently insoluble ones?

Oh, Lord. Why do I always end up with these apparently insoluble ones? Because you're a latter-day Don Quixote dreaming the impossible dream, or a JFK choosing to do things not because they are easy, but because they are hard, or even a Count Zaroff obsessed with the thrill of the hunt? Or perhaps a latter-day Dr. Frankenstein: "Where should we be if no one tried to find out what lies beyond? Have your never wanted to look beyond the clouds and the stars, or to know what causes the trees to bud, and what changes the darkness into light? But if you talk like that, people call you crazy. Well, if I could discover just one of these things - what eternity is, who sang those Cole Porter songs in Sleuth or the name of the movie with the mistress disguising herself on a train as the murdered wife, for example - I wouldn't care if they did think I was crazy." Whatever the case, I'm sure Fox Mulder was right: the truth is out there. But bear in mind what Father Fyodor realized in The Twelve Chairs: "Oh, Lord...you're so strict!"

Hey--- I see Doghouse6 was here ! If he doesn't know, it's a lost cause for sure. Oh, you're way too kind. But I'll bet Salzmank's gonna stay right here and fight for this lost cause. Even if this board gets filled with wrong guesses like these. And the Bat Outtahecks and all their bumps come marching into this place. Somebody will know the answers...somebody...

BATouttaheck and Doghouse6Thanks, fellas. I was joking more than anything; I'm no Kennedy or (let me hope) Zaroff, but in some ways I do feel quixotic at times... Now, this isn't a big deal--dear God, I know this isn't a big deal--but I tend to like fighting for lost causes. "The only causes worth fighting for" (if I remember Mr. Smith correctly), no? More than anything, I think the answer to my rhetorical question is what you articulated in the Porter thread, Doghouse: the human desire for mystery. Ehh, or maybe I'm just silly like that, in this so-called world of ours...

SalzmankHey, whatever helps get us away from the 6 o'clock news and lures Doghouse6 into writing one of his wonderful little essays is worth the time and effort put into it. These mysteries of yours are fun, even if they never get solved. OH NO.... I didn't mean that ! MUST think POSITIVE ! These mysteries of yours are fun, even if it takes a while to solve them. Better ?

Ehh, or maybe I'm just silly like that, in this so-called world of ours... Rest assured I'd never have likened you to Count Zaroff in any spirit other than that of levity...although who knows: you might look great wearing a Vandyke (I don't; makes me look like a goat). If my own memory serves, we can put Rhett Butler right there next to you and Jeff Smith: "I've always had a weakness for lost causes...once they're really lost." But the most satisfying mysteries always furnish revelations, so I trust that your Hercule Poirot/Miss Marple/Charlie Chan/Nick Charles "A-ha" moments will follow in due course (possibly, as Allan Funt - or was it Durward Kirby? - used to say, when you least expect it).
