Brief explanations of various options of the poll.
1. I am devoutly religious - This means religion is a very important part of your life and you value it a lot. (Clusium is a good example of this category of people in my opinion). The term "devoutly" is used in positive sense here.
2. I am somewhat religious - You follow religion but not very deeply. That is you don't visit church regularly and you don't read or contemplate on your holy book regularly. But somewhere in your heart you are religious. (Erjen could be example of this)
3. I am not religious but I observe some cultural practises of my birth religion (or dominant religion of my culture)- If you are in this category then it means that you are a sort of person who is not religious but you will get married in a church/temple instead of court or will visit church/temple once in a while with a religious family member. (I would fit in this category)
4. I am spiritual but not religious - This means that you don't adhere to any particular religion or religions but have spiritual leanings. (Old Sam Vimes could fit here)
5. I am indifferent to religion - You are not religious but religion does not bother you much. (Merv and probably thorshairspray are good examples of this type)
6. I am not religious but interested in it as a scholar - This option means you are personally not religious but don't mind studying various religions because you find them interesting. ( I fit in this category too)
7. I have no problems with religions if religions are not forced on me. (Cinemachinery, Vernuf etc. can be categorised here IMO)
8.. I mostly oppose religion - This means you want to see religion die in all its forms. (thefleetsin is a good example)

I'll go with the first one given the view of what devout is for the poll.
I personally don't consider myself particularly devout.

Yeah, I almost wanted to give your name along with Clusium for that choice. At end of the day religion is quite important for you and so you fit in that category quite well. And just to confirm, "devoutly" is used positively here and not negatively.

I said I was indifferent to religion because it doesn't bother me and don't care if people are religious or not. I don't think I would get married in a church or visit a church though just because they don't really excite me and I actually think they're boring :/ But if someone else is religious and it makes them happy and better people then good for them

That said, until proven otherwise, I have pretty strong faith in my beliefs.

There doesn't seem to be a poll for me. I attend church pretty regularly, I don't read the bible at every end and turn, I do charity but I don't force my beliefs on others and I certainly don't like others to force it on me. I also don't actually like organised religion ( ironically!)

6. It's a big part of archeology... and what archaeology shows about religion makes the mind boggle...
Take when the old testament was actually written... at the time, the 'tribes' were warring city states, fighting for control of the opium trade... their religious practices at the time included burying people's heads under your front room floor, and digging them up for special occasions...
The physical remains of the past don't lie, written words do.

I know we've all be taught that it's rude to question religion and we should all just put up with it like it's no big deal,
But why?
It's a system of irrational beliefs, many of them demonstrably false, and while religious people in most cases are good and try to do good, any good that religions does can be accomplished by purely secular means, from charity to moral values. Meanwhile, religion does lead to many negative consequences like terrorism, subjugating women, hating gays, and rejecting education when it conflicts with theology.
That's why I oppose it.

religions have done nothing to bring any sort of enlightenment to mankind. proclaiming ultimate truth has always been a money making proposition and religions have that science down to a tee.
unless you define 'burning in eternal torment' as enlightenment.

Define "religion". No, seriously. People assume they know what it means, what being "religious" means, what it looks like. But what is religion?

In that case, I'd consider myself part of a religious culture.

A bit of 6 and a bit more of 8.
If 7 had read "I have no problems with religions if religions are not forced on me or others", I could have gone with that.

I define religion as: A culture centred upon the worship of God or gods. I don't think religion needs culture. That's the great thing about Christianity. You can keep your culture while being a part of it only discarding the portions of it that contradict the doctrine. I think of religion much more like an organization of like mind people who share similar goals, values, & hopes while adhering to the tenets of the organization. A good religion has much more in common with a corporate or government structure than it does a society since it is, by its very nature, discriminatory towards those who wish to practice it or be a part of it. That always sounds worse than it is but it is perfectly normal.

If 7 had read "I have no problems with religions if religions are not forced on me or others", I could have gone with that. I agree with this wholeheartedly. I live in the UK where basically people are embarrassed to be religious and the law generally does a good job of keep religions under control. And I'm a straight, white male. So being an atheist is pretty easy here. There are some things I like to change here (e.g. state funding for faith schools, the clergy in the House of Lords), but I'm fairly certain that when I go for an interview I'd be more likely to get discriminated against for saying an evangelical Christian than for saying I'm an atheist (not that they're allowed to ask that anyway). But religion does continue to harm others domestically and abroad. Once it can stop doing that then I'll be fine with it. But until then I'll fight against this malevolent force in the world...
