Interesting article.
Since Antonioni's Blow-Up is mentioned, Universal could have done just as MGM, and let someone else do it in Europe, but securing the rights if it becomes a success. If Universal didn't like the end result, they could have sold the rights for a certain amount of time (15 years for example) to someone independent like Roger Corman.
Just a thought.
