Empire strikes back and return of the jedi? It's like, you gotta buy a vcr just so you can see them. In a day and age where vcrs are obsolete.

A long time ago in this particular galaxy there was a thing called...LASERDISC!!!! Still the authoritative version of the original films that have not been surpassed.

You mean the original versions, not the special editions? Cause surely, you can still watch the movies. Also, VCR is awesome!

Just get the fan edits. They are very good-better quality than the laser disks and work well on a big tv. Pretty amazing how much work they did to restore the originals for HD viewing.
They had to remove light saber glows and do all sorts of things.
Way back in 96 or 97 on a star wars or movie newsgroup--someone claiming to be a Lucasfilm employee came on and said that they were buying up unsold VHS and laserdisk copies of the films to trash them. And that anyone who wanted the pre-SE versions had better act fast because they wouldnt be available after that. Looks like an accurate prediction.

I actually did buy the VHSs at a Goodwill to see (relatively) the original cuts without added nonsense. Unfortunately, my VCR ate Return of the Jedi.

Actually, The Limited Edition DVDs are highest definition official releases. Yeah, I think they used the same source material that was used for the laserdisc, but it's pretty marginal. I believe the DVD's were 480i and the laserdiscs were 420i. But the Definitive set came with a great book. The set is going for quite a bit of coin nowadays though, like the DVDs you mentioned. Most people don't have a laserdisc player lying around though anymore....
