Equating gay people with paedophiles is exactly what the point is, as well as equating straight people with paedophiles. It's a preference that isn't chosen. The difference is between paedophile and child abuser. One can be a paedophile and have sexual attraction to children without acting upon it. So... to get this right... You are stating that being a paedophile is a normal state of mind, and as morally acceptable as being gay or straight? Just so we understand each other here. There is no moral dimension to someone's sexual preference, whether heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, or paedophile. Only sexual acts have moral dimensions to them. Nobody chooses to be sexually attracted to children. |

What if their attraction is not a choice? Do you think someone wakes up one day and says 'I think I'll choose to be attracted to little children today'? |

I do agree that pedophiles don't choose who they are attracted to. I suspect that it is a lot more common than people think and I bet that many adults have had attractions to children at some point in their adult lives. I don't think there is anything wrong or immoral about an adult having an attraction to someone who is underage as long as they don't act on it. I think society should be more understanding and accepting of adult attractions towards children, provided the adult isn't harming the child. Understanding? Maybe. Accepting? Not a chance. For the same reason I am not going to swim with a Tiger Shark or pet a python. We don't accept psychopaths even if they haven't killed anyone. |

We often chastise pedophiles for just being pedophiles alone. Not me. I am sympathetic towards pedophiles; as far as I'm concerned they are mentally ill and those who are desperately trying not to act on their desires deserve all the help and support we can give them. By all means, if one acts on his desires and rapes a child then bring the law down upon him. But how could anybody NOT want to avoid those rapes in the first place? Agreed. We should be trying to find treatments, even outright cures, for this condition. Whilst I don't doubt that they operate in the same way, of course the difference between the two is that a pedophile who acts on his urges automatically causes immense harm to an innocent. A homosexual does not. You might as well compare an innate desire to murder with an innate desire to eat chocolate. |
