The book and miniseries opens with poor little Georgie's demise and then jumps ahead to the modern day.
Since the opening of the first movie used the storm drain scene the second one will have to find a new starting point. They may use a flashback from the first movie, or start at the adult characters being called back.
In the miniseries a kid disappears and Mike is sparked to call his friends to come back. In the book a hate crime against a gay couple takes place during a town fair. These could work as starting points easily enough, but I'd kind of expect another dynamic scene to open it.
There was talk of a deleted scene from the first movie of Pennywise, in a closer to human form, is scene stealing a baby from a village (Derry) in the colonial era. I could certainly see that being brought back.
But in terms of something from the book, I'd like the idea of the story of the Black Spot night club attack that Mike's grandfather tells him. It would establish the history, and that Mike is the investigator of the group and the one that calls them all back. The question then is whether this would this be Mike as a kid or an adult.
I could see them going another way, but I think a scene that gives us a background of Pennywise beyond just their experience would work well.

I just hope it's way better than the first film and I can salvage something from the high hopes I had for the project.

I just hope it's way better than the first film and I can salvage something from the high hopes I had for the project. I thought it was pretty decent, if not great. But a lot of the more impactful storytelling takes place in the grown up portion of the story. I was also of the opinion that much of the impact came from juxtaposing and mirroring the childhood story with and against the adult story, so splitting them up sort of undoes that... But anyway, what would you, then, hope to see in part 2 that would fix the whole thing for you?

It looks like both approaches will be taken to some degree: deadline.com/2018/06/it-chapter-two-xavier-dolan-will-beinbrink-new-line-sequel-1202415023/This story contains the casting of Adrian Mellon who was the gay character that was the victim of the hate crime at the beginning of the book. www.denofgeek.com/us/movies/it-chapter-two/266450/it-chapter-2-cast-release-date-story-and-newsAnd this article references another that says the movie opens with Mike hearing the black spot story: " Slashfilm also revealed that the second movie will open with a flashback of The Black Spot and the night Mike's parents were killed in a fire. The movie will also feature some of the novel's crazier cosmological stuff such as the Macroverse and the Turtle. " How the turtle will make sense, I don't know. but I'm glad that some of the more psychic and other wordly elements will be included. The climax to the first one seemed a little to small scale and ordinary. You didn't get the sense of scope and history that it felt like it needed. One scene I thought really felt like it was missing from the narrative was the sort of psychedelic vision in the 'smoke hole.' It would have needed a good deal more background and development since they never touched on the clubhouse or dam or anything, but it would have gone a long way to making Pennywise as formidable as he needed to be. Knowing that they are also going to shoot some flashbacks with the kids, I really kind of hope that some of that building and bonding stuff by the water is going to be included now, too.
