THE MANIPULATOR 1971 IMDB review: "The legendary Mickey Rooney gives an incredibly wild, hammy and over-the-top full-tilt insane, inspired and uninhibited performance as B.J. Lang, a deranged and delusional psychotic washed-up Hollywood has-been who thinks he's a great successful big-time film director ala Orson Welles. Lang relentlessly torments and terrorizes hapless lovely aspiring actress Carlotta (the beautiful Luana Anders) on a dingy and decrepit abandoned studio back lot: he rants and raves to himself with rip-snorting gonzo aplomb, spoon feeds her baby food, impersonates an effeminate make-up artist (Rooney sports bright red lipstick and gaudy blue eye shadow!), pretends to have a fatal massive heart attack, and occasionally breaks into these astounding impromptu a cappella renditions of "Chattanooga Choo Choo" which he heartily belts out in this pained hoarse'n'wheezy croak of a voice.

Mickey Rooney dictated his own distinguished "love-hate" relationship with horror cinema based upon moral outrage and supposed religious ideals, nevermind his 8 marriages and supposed countless affairs. All the reports he squandered money instead of bequeathing were probably true and he constantly contradicted himself in interviews. But he could act, by God, he could act up a storm.

petrolino : Valley of the Dolls (1967) comes to mind. I've actually never seen it, but I've heard about it enough times, and have read the plot description, to gather that it must fit in the category of "films about the dark side of Hollywood."
Strong shout, no doubt.

A Face in the Crowd. Just an incredible film.
What Makes Sammy Run was just too obvious.

THE LAST TYCOON HURLYBURLY ELLIE PARKER I like 'Ellie Parker'. Naomi Watts, Mark Pellegrino and director Scott Coffey worked together on 'Mulholland Dr.' Jennifer Syme was a close associate of David Lynch who passed away the year 'Mulholland Dr.' was released.
Not heard of 'Hurlyburly'.

Martin Ritt's The Front (1976), though set in NYC, looks at HUAC and the Hollywood blacklist. Ritt, Zero Mostel, and a few others involved in the film had been blacklisted.

based on leo tolstoy, 5/5 from me! Very interesting movie about the dark side of the film business. As is director Bernard Rose's next picture, 'Snuff-Movie' (2005).

I don't think anyone mentioned INSERTS (1975), starring Richard Dreyfuss, Veronica Cartwright, and Bob Hoskins. Not a great movie by any means, and one that's very hard to watch (grim and explicit), but Veronica Cartwright's performance as a drug-addicted porn star is utterly brilliant. She deserved an Oscar nomination for it and, had it been a different kind of film, she probably would have received one.
Fascinating drama, brilliantly acted by Richard Dreyfuss, Veronica Cartwright and Jessica Harper, with Bob Hoskins as Big Mac.
