One of my favorite shows but it is distinctly a period show , starting 1940 in Britain during the 2nd World War .
There are two key leads surrounded by a strong and growing support cast based over a 7 year journey in 9 Seasons .
The main figure is Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle , a widowed nearing-retirement accomplished and
sharp veteran , cut adrift by the coming war and his age , and placed in a quiet county to see out the last days of his career .
But the coming events have other commitments in store for him .
Continually complaining to his superiors , he is given an assistant , Samantha Stewart from the Motorised Transport Corp (MTC) .
She is an intelligent , naturally curious and empathic , assistant and driver for him .
Soon after a former colleague , the kind and humble Police Sergeant Paul Milner , now a suffering disabled veteran , joins their team .
Most of his cases are war related , and as the series progresses he is increasingly employed by the British Intelligence Service for
sensitive cases and situations .
The Series is based around intelligence files held by the British War Ministry from the WWII and early Cold War Period .
The backstory of the Series is of course the relationship between Foyle and his assistant , Samantha Stewart .
As the Series progresses , there develops a deep respect and affection between them , to where they intuitively
can act together . With the war in progress , romantic relationships do not come easily to Samantha . Amongst her
social romances , is Foyle's son , which doesn't work out well for her . Eventually she marries but it is troubled .
In the finale of the show jammed of political ambiguity , she suddenly realises who she really loves as does Foyle .
And that ending was dripping with a mood reminiscent of Casablanca .
