He was definitely a sick man. It's hard to believe the Praetorian Guard put up with him for as long as they did.

Malcolm McDowell was in biopic about Caligula, the theatrical version had to be heavily cut and censored, pretty much ruined his career

No, I'm not being sarcastic. The guy killed his pregnant sister, by eating her tummy, because he was afraid her unborn child would overthrow him, just like Zeus/Jupiter had the potential of being overthrown by one of his own children!!!!

Was it the lead poisoning? I heard that Caligula also suffered from excruciating headaches.

Who's more crazy: Caligula or Christians? Or other Abrahamists (Muslims, Jews)? Let's compare, shall we?
Caligula Invited His Horse To Drink Wine At His Dinner Table Christians worship a man who cursed a fig tree.
Caligula Tried To Replace The Head On The Statue Of Zeus With His Own Christians worship a man whom they claim is the Son of God; some even worship him as God
Caligula Ordered His Army To Attack The English Channel (disputed) Christians invented a ritual where people get sprayed with water, or dumped in water, and are then considered members of the cult
Caligula Ordered A Mass Execution Because He Thought People Were Praying Against Him Christians and Muslims have killed so many people worshipping other gods or religions; they make Caligula look like an amateur
Caligula Built Massive Floating Orgy Palaces Christians had their priests conduct their private orgies with children; and getting away with it for a long time; Muslims do it with women
Caligula Rode A Horse Across A Gulf Just To Prove a Fortune-Teller Wrong Christians and Jews regard a story as "Word of God" which features a man (Elias) performing a conjuring trick with lightning and meat just to spite priests of a different religion (The same Elias then ordered a mass execution because he thought people were praying to other deities than his preferred one; sounds familiar?)
Caligula Had An Audience Devoured Alive Because He Was Bored Christians conquistadores (Cortez, Pizarro and many more) killed plenty of people unprovoked because they didn't give them gold that didn't exist
Caligula Wouldn’t Let Anyone Mention Goats Around Him Christians and Jews have a commandment about not taking their deity's name in vain, and not having other deities before it
Caligula Forced A Man To Drink With Him After Murdering The Man’s Son Christians and Jews worship a deity that told a man to sacrifice his son, and killed children, and let Job be kicked around by God's court jester (aka Satan)
Caligula Threatened To Beat Up A God Christians and Muslims threaten to kill people who don't believe in their version of that god
Bottom line: Maybe Caligula didn't have both oars in the water; but religious people shouldn't throw stones. Especially if they worship the God of Abraham; aka the God of Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Especially if they worship the God of Abraham; aka the God of Jews, Christians and Muslims. What exactly was your point....? How is Christ Cursing a fig tree the same as caligula inviting his horse to drink wine at the table? Caligula's personal belief in his own divinity was the result of his own mental narcissism. While all the Roman emperors were considered gods, Caligula took it a step further, & considered him higher than even Jupiter (the king god of the Roman pantheon). Jesus Withdrew from the crowds when they tried to force Him to be their king (Gospel according to St. John chapter 6, verse 15). Uhm...how is Baptism as bad as Caligula allegedly trying to attack the English Channel?? Atheists have had millions of people murdered under Communist & similar regimes, for continuing to follow Christianity, Judaism, & other religions. Also, non-abrahamic have persecuted non-believers too. So, if you want to say that Christians & Muslims have made Caligula "look like an amateur," then so have atheists, etc. too. Priests & other Christian clergy that sexually abused children went directly against Christ's Teaching (He Had very Strong Words of condemnation against child molester: "If anyone causes any of these little ones to stumble, it would be better for them to have a millstone tied around their necks, & drowned in the depths of the sea." - St. Matthew chapter 18, chapter 6). Again, how is the story of the Prophet Elijah having a contest to prove the Power Of the God of Abraham, over Baal, on par with Caligula trying to disprove a fortune teller? And if you read the Book of Kings, Ahab & Jezebel - the rulers who brought in Baal worship to Israel-were awful people. Eg:Having a farmer executed because he refused to give over his family's vineyard to Ahab, when Ahab coveted it for his own. Nobody said that Cortez et al, were angels. They were greedy buggers. How is not mentioning goats around Caligula on par with keeping the Lord's Name Holy? God Saved Isaac from being Sacrificed; it was the sinfulness of humanity which led to children being killed. Job's trials came to an end (& for the record, Satan is not God's court jester). Again, atheists threatened to beat up religious believers, & believers of other religions have also done the same. Bottom line: Phludowin, you really have to go out of your way to compare a lunatic such as Caligula to Abraham, especially Christ, & was ultimately pathetic.

How is Christ Cursing a fig tree the same as caligula inviting his horse to drink wine at the table? It isn't. And I never said it was the same. It's however equally crazy to treat a fig tree and a horse as a responsible entity. Caligula is rightfully considered crazy for it; but Christians worship Jesus. But do Christians consider Jesus to be God, or at least the son of God? If they do, then they are considering a man to be a god. As did Caligula. Uhm...how is Baptism as bad as Caligula allegedly trying to attack the English Channel?? Bad? Who said anything about baptism being bad? Oh right, you did. I didn't say anything about it being bad. But maybe I should have. All Caligula did was order his soldiers to beat the water of the English channel with swords. But what does Baptism do? This: abcnews.go.com/Health/study-holy-water-harmful-health/story?id=20257722Atheists have had millions of people murdered under Communist & similar regimes, for continuing to follow Christianity, Judaism, & other religions. Also, non-abrahamic have persecuted non-believers too. So, if you want to say that Christians & Muslims have made Caligula "look like an amateur," then so have atheists, etc. too. I never said otherwise. But Caligula was a theist. Yeah right. No true Scotsman was ever spared from being used as an excuse by religious apologists. Again, how is the story of the Prophet Elijah having a contest to prove the Power Of the God of Abraham, over Baal, on par with Caligula trying to disprove a fortune teller? Elijah wanted to prove a bunch of people who claimed to have contact to a supernatural entity wrong. Caligula wanted to prove a fortune teller who claimed to have contact to supernatural entities wrong. Nobody said that Cortez et al, were angels. They were greedy buggers. They were Christians. How is not mentioning goats around Caligula on par with keeping the Lord's Name Holy? How is it not? Goats exist. God's existence is unlikely. Phludowin, you really have to go out of your way to compare a lunatic such as Caligula to Abraham, especially Christ, & was ultimately pathetic. Is this English? My point stands.

Nobody said that Jesus Considered the fig tree to be a responsible entity. He Cursed the fig tree in order to Teach His disciples a lesson in faith and the fate of those that are not loyal to God. There is a world of difference between the Lord Jesus & Caligula. All witnesses of Jesus, claimed that He Did EXTRAORDINARY Wonders & Miracles, that Only God Could Do, including Rising from the Dead. Even the Jewish historian Flavius Josephus had recorded Him as Performing "Surprising Deeds." Caligula's only claim to divinity was the fact that he was an emperor (the Roman emperors were worshipped as divine, as were all royal rulers, back in ancient times). Yes, Caligula was a theist. He worshipped HIMSELF. The priests of Baal were brought in from a foreign nation, by a despotic queen (who came from said nation), to impose the worship of her god over the God of the Children of Israel. Elijah was re-asserting the ancestral God of his people over a foreign deity. Nobody said that they were not Christians. Who says that God's Existence is unlikely? You...? Yes, what I said was English, & no, your point does not stand.

This is a really weird thread. As history it is mildly interesting butt what is the point of comparing Caligula to Christ? I wasn't comparing Caligula to Christ. I was comparing Caligula's behaviours to Christian behaviours. The subject of this thread is Caligula's insanity. In my opinion a person should only be considered crazy if diagnosed as such, by psychological professionals. Psychology as a science did not exist in Caligula's time, and all the author of the article in the OP did was list behaviours they considered weird. All I did was compare it to Christian behaviours I consider weird. It's possible that Caligula was crazy, but just listing a few quirks and horrible deeds which Caligula may or may not have committed is not enough to establish his craziness. At least that's my opinion.

But other rulers were in office for shorter times and are not considered crazy. It is possible that Caligula was simply caught in a struggle for power, that he was trying to implement measures against his senior officers, and that they wanted him gone, and in order to justify removing him they made up stories about him. Or it is possible that he really was crazy, and a danger to Rome. I don't know; but I know that history is written by the winners.

Malcolm McDowell was in biopic about Caligula, the theatrical version had to be heavily cut and censored, pretty much ruined his career McDowell has a massive filmography after he did Caligula. How did it destroy his career?
The version I originally saw had all the hardcore scenes and some violence modified. It was soft core sex\porn only. It lost around 10mins and actually makes it a better film. It still runs for around 2 half hours.

His post-Caligula career seems to mostly consist of TV appearances, cartoon voice overs, straight to DVD schlock, and uh...Tank Girl, so yeah I think "ruined" is pretty accurate. Though his drug abuse probably didn't help either.

He was I suppose what is called a character actor, not so much generic leading man material, unless it was something outlandish and over-the-top, which I would say suited his occasionally manic and perhaps even smug on-screen persona. His style didn't sit well with superstar actor material.
