+ Summer Olympics - Caters to a wider range of audience. Provides far more diverse sporting events.

They're both massive and I really like both, but it's the World Cup, at least in Europe. I think (I'm not sure) more people worldwide watch the Olympics, but people are way more engaged the World Cup than in the Olympics. I'd go as far as naming the World Cup the biggest sporting event in the world (except for people in the US).

Summer Olympics. 12hrs a day. Tokyo 2020: 33 sports with 339 events. 206 nations competing, 11,091 athletes.
The only way the World Cup could match that is if we consider as FIFA does, that the WC truly commences with qualifying, when nearly every nation is playing & competing leading up. Alas, the Olympic qualifying itself then would supercede that angle too.

Prediction.
Olympics will be obsolete in the next 20 years.
Then the proper solution will be done - Winter and Summer Olympics in the same year every 5 years...........

It's got to be the World Cup. Are there massive street parties with giant screens to watch any Olympic event anywhere in the world?

World cup has the biggest audience 3.2billion. That was 2014 FIFA WC. The same country (Brazil) hosted summer olympics in 2016 and estimated audience was 3.5 billion. Also, important to note than Olympics has more diverse and dispersed viewership whereas Fifa WC has more concentrated viewership.

I'd go as far as naming the World Cup the biggest sporting event in the world (except for people in the US). Quarter of this world's population lives in Indian subcontinent and a quarter lives in China. I don't know which is bigger in China but to put the record straight, Fifa WC doesn't come even close to Cricket WC in Subcontinent. Also, I do believe that given China's strong performance in Olympics they would be more interested in and more involved in Olympics than Fifa WC. So that's half of humanity that probably doesn't see Fifa wc as the biggest sporting event in the world. and then we have America.

Come on the Cricket WC is Mickey Mouse shite! Every cricket fan knows that! The quality doesn't matter. Indians and Pakistanis and Sri Lankans are no where interested in football WC compared to cricket WC. They are mad about cricket. You have to spend some time in subcontinent to know that cricket is bigger than religion.

I watched exactly 0 seconds of the last Olympics. Or maybe 30 seconds if we had some female boxer boxing in it

Super Bowl The event during which citizens of a country eat around 1.3 billion chicken wings? is it safe to say we can rank WrestleMania above The World Cup and The Olympics?

Alas, the Olympic qualifying itself then would supercede that angle too. If that's your criteria (and of course it is a perfectly valid criteria) then you are right. If however you think in terms of impact, then the answer has to be the World Cup. I am sure that the entire country of Senegal stopped to watch their match against Japan today - and it wasn't even a deciding match. Nothing comes close in the Olympics. The Olympics may be bigger in terms of numbers but the World Cup is much more important to more people.
