Depends on the situation. If having a general conversation with friends it wouldn't matter either way. If you are in a meeting at work and your job/business has nothing to do with maritime species or activities then it is stupid. It could be considered smart if said during a philosophical or religious debate. Depending on what is being discussed in the debate.

make you seem smart or stupid? Neither. It makes you sound arrogant. Even though you're not wrong. Strange that.

I actually saw a mermaid once when I was high as a kite at Malaga Cove near where I live in Redondo Beach. We had been drinking and smoking weed at the beach at night. Then we were running along the shoreline jumping over clumps of seaweed. We both jumped over one clump and we both stopped simultaneously in our tracks. There was what appeared to be a naked lady entangled in kelp, or part kelp, or part sea creature. We both saw it independent of one another. We slowly crept back to make sure our eyes had not deceived us. And we both ran in terror because that is indeed exactly what we both saw, a dead mermaid. The next day I checked the morning paper and there was no report of anything unusual on the shoreline at Malaga Cove. But we know what we saw.

On a first date I once made the mistake of saying "...dragons don't exist". That alone should tell you how that scenario was going. But wait it gets better!
She responded by saying "we don't know that" and then she referred me to the book Chariots of the Gods by Erich Von Daniken.
If you WANT to have a laugh... read that. It actually has the nerve to pass itself off as researched non-fiction when in fact its totally made up clap-trap that has been debunked SO badly that it makes you wonder how anyone believe it in the first place. And she was referencing it.
Sheer insanity. I made it a point to never see her again. I'm sure SHE thought I was an asshole. LOL!

Just that statement alone make you not so smart. Because they do exist. I bet it tastes like tuna though.
