As everyone knows, he is a major star in the WB cartoon roster, although he does very little and only says, "Beep, beep!"
But I'm curious about one thing: are road runners really "flightless" birds, as are the ostrich, kiwi, emu, and rhea?
According to some sources, road runners "prefer" to run than to fly. And Wiki claims that these birds use their wings as "gliders" rather than actually flying. So...can road runners actually fly?
Bottom line: I really would have liked to see WB's Road Runner fly sometimes, just like Tweety and Daffy Duck. But I suppose with his tiny torso and wings, and his enormous feet, flying would have been impossible for this star.

They can fly, but they're not very good at it. Since they have the legs for running, that's their preferred mode of travel. They can fly in short bursts but choose to do so only when absolutely necessary, as when faced with imminent danger from various types of Acme weaponry. The fact that the WB Road Runner never finds it necessary to fly indicates his total lack of feeling threatened by any of Wile E. Coyote's contraptions.

Did you know that a coyote runs 37 km/h faster than a road runner in real life. So there is no way a road runner could outrun a coyote.
That being said Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner are among my favorite cartoons. I still enjoy watching them even now when i am in my mid 30s

Aw, policital--he's adorable. :-D But wouldn't he take off by wing if a car approached? Of course, in a cartoon, he'd be driving the car in pursuit of the coyote.

I'm sorry, Darth, but I don't understand this video. Is this car called a "road runner"? Yes.

I remember as a child, a book called "The Peevish Penguin". It was about an ill-tempered penguin who was determined to fly. Well, at the end, he (kinda) succeeded; he slid down an icy ramp, spread his wings, and soared into the air. All his friends emulated him, although it wasn't really "flying".

I guess you could see this as a modern retelling of Sisyphus. The coyote is doomed to try to catch the Road Runner over and over again without succeeding. I used to root for Coyote so hard. I think what upset me about it is he was trying to problem solve with his elaborate traps and nothing worked.

I think what upset me about it is he was trying to problem solve with his elaborate traps and nothing worked. Well, the Coyote was a self-proclaimed "genius" who believed his Acme junk would enable him to succeed in capturing the Road Runner. And if he did succeed; if he caught and ate the Road Runner--then what? Would he then go after Bugs Bunny, as he tried to do in a few cartoons? Bugs was far more intelligent than the Coyote; most likely the Coyote would have eventually given up. BTW, has anyone else noticed that there was no other animal life in the Road Runner/Coyote cartoons? Yes, it might have been distracting, but IMO, it would be nice if the Road Runner had friends: maybe a prairie dog, or a lizard, or a hedgehog, or maybe even a rattlesnake.

As far as a Hedgehog to be pals with Mr. RR ... not likely
"A hedgehog is any of the spiny mammals of the subfamily Erinaceinae, in the eulipotyphlan family Erinaceidae. There are seventeen species of hedgehog in five genera, found through parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, and in New Zealand by introduction. There are no hedgehogs native to Australia, and no living species native to the Americas (the extinct genus Amphechinus was once present in North America)."
Prairie Dogs "Prairie dogs (genus Cynomys) are herbivorous burrowing rodents native to the grasslands of North America. The five species are: black-tailed, white-tailed, Gunnison's, Utah, and Mexican prairie dogs. They are a type of ground squirrel, found in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In Mexico, prairie dogs are found primarily in the northern states, which lie at the southern end of the Great Plains: northeastern Sonora, north and northeastern Chihuahua, northern Coahuila, northern Nuevo León, and northern Tamaulipas. In the United States, they range primarily to the west of the Mississippi River, though they have also been introduced in a few eastern locales. Despite the name, they are not actually canines."
May be in RR territory but they are pretty big for the bird to catch and kill... may be able to go for the babies though.
Once watched a RR "play" with a baby rabbit _much as a cat "plays" with its dinner … and then scarf it down.
Thus endeth the nature "discussion" and we return to the regularly scheduled thread still with nothing about Classic Film to be seen.

Wile E Coyote, super genius.
There was also the wolf and the sheepdog which was basically Wile E Coyote with a red nose.
