Because I loved Dark Shadows as a child so much my child is named after a character, I couldnt enjoy the movie in the light of a parallel world which DS played with when it aired?

Because I loved David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin, I had to hate Armie Hammer as Illya?

Because I saw Superman with Christopher Reeve, I had to hate Dean Cain in Lois & Clark? Tom Welling in Smallville? Henry Cavill in DCEU?

I LOVED Lois & Clark. Watched Smallville for 5 seasons. I LOVE Cavill as Supes & hate Snyder for trying to make Kal-El Bruce Wayne.

This set of fans are horrid.

Its only a small group. Its not the whole fandom. Just like a quarter or a third.

If I found out Captain Kangaroo was a child molester I might be sad...but it doesnt change my state of innocence & the enjoyment i got from that show. It would be just a nasty footnote.

I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to liking the character over the actor.

Yes, those fans are horrid. I don't think it matters how small of a group it is. They are very loud and will verbally beat down people that has a difference of opinion from them.

I think if I found out if someone on a show or a filmmaker did something I would be thinking about what their mindset was when they did that movie/show.

In a sidestep, my kid LOVED Barney. I had to hide the videos because if she watched them too late she would get too hyper & wouldnt go to sleep. A slice of older kids-& I saw college age kids do it as well-would do nasty stuff. Rip up Barney dolls, etc.

Barney wasnt made for them. Barney was made for a specific age group, an age group that loves repetition, being able to repeat the magic spell that transformed the hero, etc.

And then I saw about Ahmed Best.

Despite the Star Wars films literally being about the perils of giving in to your anger, a subset of fans have fallen to the dark side and try to justify sending abuse to the (usually female) stars – and don't even get us started on the male-only fan edit or petitions to remake The Last Jedi.

The revelation that Jar-Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best considered suicide because the backlash against his character was so huge caused Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to speak out against those extreme fans.

Gunn tweeted: "Star Wars (or any movie) may be important to you, but it doesn't belong to you.

"If your self-esteem depends on how good you think the current Star Wars is, or your childhood is ruined because you don't like something in a movie, GO TO THERAPY.

"Critique it. Don't like it. But spewing hate and bile at individuals just doing their best to tell a story, even if the story sucks, is lame. Don't watch it!"

While Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran have left social media over the abuse (let's not mince words here), The Last Jedi's director Rian Johnson is treating the more ridiculous tweets with the amount of sarcasm they deserve.

Despite the relative underperformance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, Disney is still planning plenty more films in the franchise. If that bothers you, maybe it's time to draw a line.

My child LOVED Jar Jar.
I honestly didnt see what was so horrible about him because I saw he was designed as a mascot type character for the kids not unlike R2 in New Hope.

What after all, is a halo? It's only one more thing to keep clean.

In my mind, making derivative movies is what killed the franchise. First TFA, then TLJ. Derivative action, low brow humor, blatant disrespect/disinterest with the established mythos, and the injection of social politics is what has cemented this new direction as uninteresting. I don't see them rebooting the ST, so best case is we go back in time and tell some Old Republic stories that have more of the SW universe heart than the current abominations.
