Some movies prefer to use songs from pop culture or other classic songs over a score. What movies do you think use great songs to replace an original score?
I personally prefer to have an original score, but Goodfellas used a brilliant soundtrack that truly elevated that movie into greatness. Parts of John Wick used fantastic musical soundtracks as well.

You got some good taste there. "Pulp Fiction" is I think one of the best ever examples of using a soundtrack effectively.

"Vanilla Sky" has a great soundtrack. I understand why some may not like the movie, but it's one of my favorites. The DVD commentary highlights how attentive Cameron Crowe was to choosing the soundtrack and it really shows.
(Preparing for tomatoes to be thrown) I loved the Prince album that accompanied "Batman." There are a couple of stinkers on the album, but as a long time fan of Prince, I have to give it some credit. He was an ambitious musician and was actually trying to sing many of the songs in the character of Batman, Bruce Wayne, the Joker, and even Vicky Vale. The synth effects have certainly dated, but I still love it. The songs "Lemon Crush" and "Arms of Orion" in particular. I don't remember where either were used in the film, but I still enjoy them today.

I thought of Singles but for some reason I didn't consider Vanilla Sky, Fast Times, Almost Famous and Jerry Maguire. They all have good soundtracks, too. Of course it's not surprising when you have Nancy Wilson helping out.

I like the soundtracks to all the films you mentioned except "Almost Famous." That's because I haven't heard it yet. Going to order it and listen on the way to and from work tomorrow, thanks for pointing it out. Crowe's pretty reliable for a good soundtrack. Cheers.

You'll laugh, but.... Fraternity Vacation. Music score by Brad Fiedel. The soundtrack is a mix of existing and newly composed songs. What makes the soundtrack great is that Fiedel used fragments from his original songs as leitmotives for the original "background" score. As a result, the songs and original score all blend seamlessly together. It's truly an amazing score, and it took far more planning than one would think would go into a simple teen sex comedy.
Other good soundtracks I can think of:
Dirty Dancing The Big Chill Valley Girl Stand By Me

Actually, there are a couple original tracks but it's mostly just fun early 60's songs.

All of Tarantino's movies have great soundtracks and a good chunk of Scorsese's too.
For use of instrumental music/classical music, it's hard to beat Kubrick.

John Lanchbery’s ingenious arrangement of Cole Porter songs into a cohesive score for Evil Under the Sun is better than the movie itself.

I will add the movie which began the use of pop songs in place of a composed underscore, the one without which the others would not exist, the Hollywood changing "Easy Rider" (1969) directed by Dennis Hopper.
