The 120 Days of Sodom. Believe me when I say this. It is shocking. Oh yeah, I read that one. I liked the movie more. It made me re-think violence and sex as entertainment... IMO it was anti-porn.

I'd say Mein Kampf, because it was all there for anybody to read before it took place.

Misery
Pretty humdrum ( good but I knew more or less what was going to happen) until when she got the blahs and then a rat walked in.

Harvest Home by Thomas Tryon. I felt so sorry for the protagonist at the end...but before the end, I got absolutely creeped out!

The Talisman by peter straub and stephen king. Probably should re-read it. I really liked that book, I didn't consider it creepy but it is one of my favorite King novels.

The Devil in the White City and Monster of Florence. I can't wait for the Monster of Florence film starring Clooney.

house on hackman hill was a novel. Salem's Lot by Stephen King Communion by Whitley Streiber Edit: The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty (much scarier than the film, in my opinion.)

"Killer Fiction" by Gerard Schaefer. Serial killer short stories written by an actual serial killer. Believed to be disguised retellings of murders he actually committed.

Pet Sematary stuck with me for a while after reading it back in high school.
Sabbath’s Theater by Philip Roth may be equally creepy but in a completely different way.

Helter Skelter. Got creeped out by the thought of some random people coming in and butchering me in my own home.

The Hot Zone by Richard Preston really scared me, it is about the beginnings of the ebola virus and an outbreak that occurred in the US, reads more like a novel, compelling and terrifying book
The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty is not as scary or effective as the film, but still has plenty of good creepy moments.
I always felt that Stephen King's 'Salem's Lot not only one of his best but the scariest.
Hell House by Richard Matheson is a more mature, rational, graphic take on the haunted house novel compared to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, which does have a few decent chilling moments itself, but its scares are much more subtle.
Dracula by Bram Stoker has some wonderfully bone-chilling moments, well deserved classic.
Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco is maybe my favorite haunted house novel, very short, not graphic or gore but good creepy fun. I have not seen the adapted film since the dvd I bought was so blurry I gave up on it. I have seen the ending on Youtube, though, and the book is much different. Very well written, too.
The Keep by F. Paul Wilson is my favorite horror novel. I have read it several times and it never fails to scare me. I only wish the filmed version were half as good. Needs to be remade.
The Face That Must Die by Ramsey Campbell is a fascinating, chilling serial killer novel, I won't say why because it would spoil the surprise. There is an overwhelming sense of growing dread as things spiral more and more out of control.
