Any fans of the "South of Heaven" album by the metal band Slayer? How has it held up after 30 years?
While not the best album the band has released, I do think it's certainly an above-average album. Most people know of songs like "South of Heaven" and "Mandatory Suicide", but I think there are also memorable tracks like "Silent Scream", "Ghosts of War" and "Spill The Blood". I even think "Behind The Crooked Cross" is good.

As I said over in Music General, I am a fan of this album, and I think it's held up very well. Although I prefer the album that preceded it ("Reign in Blood") and the album that followed it ("Seasons in the Abyss").
But "South of Heaven" was the next logical step in Slayer's development after "Reign in Blood", which had the band playing at the level of human endurance. Slowing things down and mixing things up was the way to go, and they perfected that approach on "Seasons in the Abyss".
And the title track makes for one hell of a Christmas lights display!

I think that's one of the reasons they stayed so strong for so long. Not all the albums sound the same. They would've burned themselves out really quick trying to recreate Reign in blood.

The original version of the "Reign in Blood" album, (without the bonus tracks later added to the CD) was just under 29 minutes! They had to learn pace themselves to have any longevity.
