If you want to know all about the 'Irishman' there is a great summary here from another poster.
IMDB2.freeforums.net/thread/113551/5-before-watching-Irishman
If this film is at least released in limited theaters across the U.S. it can be considered for the OSCARS.
Imagine the game changer this will be. NETFLIX has made 'Beasts of No Nation' and other low budget indie films. However, a 150M dollar budget film directed by Martin Scorsese and featuring DeNiro, Pacino, Keitel, and Pesci ...
If this film were released to Theaters, made a descent box office haul, then was only available for NETFLIX streaming, then won an Oscar? This could open the door for studios to escape MAJOR MOTION PICTURE studios such as Disney, Fox, Paramount, Universal, WB, etc...
Maybe this could be a new age where Giant Hollywood Blockbusters with 100M-200M dollar budgets could be about Mafia, or Westerns, or Fantasy, whatever, and not a CBM, or Shared Universe, or a Franchise such as Star Wars.
I hope this film is a huge success.

Agreed. It's success could mean Netflix becomes a gateway for creative film makers looking to unchain themselves from the big studios.

I hope this film is a huge success. Netflix has the worst distribution model. It will not be a modest success in theaters since it will only be out long enough to be a contender. The academy will not reward it since it doesn't help the industry as much as it helps TV. It is weird that they wouldn't simply embrace Amazon's model since it should make them more money. Otherwise, we are going to hear that is a huge success from Netflix itself.

How exactly does Netflix measure the success of its original projects? They don't make money off individual films, I believe? I'm guessing most of their revenue comes from subscriptions in which case would they have some kind of watch time or views as an indicator for success?

That's exactly what they do but their numbers, unlike HBO or another pay provider, their numbers are internal. I'm not sure why The Irishman would play better than Bright or Cloverfield Paradox, but it is entirely likely that Netflix will say it was their most successful movie ever. Amazon does a true blue release with a traditional DVD distribution followed quickly by access on Prime and thus they have more respect in Hollywood.

Thanks for linking that summary. I'm wary of high expectations for any film, but it's difficult to imagine what might go wrong.
In Scorsese we trust.

I hope this film is a huge success. Why would ya need to spend 100-200 million on a gangster movie or a Western or even a fantasy? Movies that aren't filled with tons of CGI don't need to spend half that much. Even something like District 9 only cost 30 million.

That'd be unreal. It'd be the New Hollywood era combined with the period of big old school epics in the fifties and sixties. Seriously, that'd be incredibly unbelievably awesome.

I'm not saying they have to cost 100M - 200M, I'm just saying the 'could' it's a possibility. Instead of a hard NO from studios.
Kevin Costner wanted to make a Western Trilogy back in 2014. He said to reduce costs he would film it all at once (Lord of the Rings Style). It would be a true 6-7 hour Epic cut into 3 films. How much would it cost to make a 'western'?
No major Studio would back this up. So he moved on. This is the man who made "Dances with Wolves" and "Open Range", he has a built in fan base, this was coming off the successful heels of 'Hatfield's and McCoys" in which he won an Emmy and Golden Globe. That's why this is important, because Netflix or Amazon might fund it.

Even something like District 9 only cost 30 million. Depends on the film. Like if you want to make a western as big as like Heaven's Gate or HOW THE WEST WAS WON, that I can see costing a pretty penny. Or a colossal clusterf*ck like The Lone Ranger perhaps.
