Shame, because 9 times out of 10 you had people call out the BS you'd just read in the article.

More corporate censorship, which is one of the biggest problems in America that no one talks about. Corporations want to censor forms of communication that can lead to criticism of authority.

They were a sewer. And a ton of streaming links. No great loss.

Couldn't comment since they forced you to use Facebook to do it. Even if I tried, a pop-up would come up and then immediately disappear.

I used to comment there a lot until they made you use Facebook to comment. The live in-game comments were hilarious.

A guy called me a donkey for celebrating the Celtics championship in 2008, that still makes me laugh. I eventually gave up because even fans of my own teams became impossible to talk to. I said something critical of the Patriots once and like twelve people hilariously attacked me and accused me of being a fan of either the Jets or the Steelers.

I have never used that particular comments section but this seems to be the trend everywhere, which is a shame. I often find the readers' comments quite entertaining and very informative as well (if not about the facts, then about what the people think of the issue).

There’s probably fans here that still think it was a good idea for the Sixers to sign Andrew Bynum.

You can't say anything about Lebron without either the pro-Jordan or pro-Lebron side overreacting. Worst part of social media commenting is that the most inflammatory postings always rise to the top like smegma-encrusted pus.

You must have said it at the wrong time. If you’d said it following a Patriots loss I’m sure everyone would have concurred with you. Boston fans in particular seem constantly ready to turn on the team at the drop of a hat, no matter how successful they’ve been. I remember this past season when the Pats lost to Carolina and the sky was basically falling in New England over the “worst defense of the Belichick era.” I mean, as the Super Bowl showed, that was probably right but... whatever, they still made it back to the freaking Super Bowl.

Hell I can be fairly critical of the Pats at times, but I don't think I was bitching about anything at the time. I think I made a comment about how they needed to make some moves during the offseason because the team wasn't good enough to contend for a title as currently constituted. It seemed very clear that I was a Pats fan pointing out the obvious, yet a bunch of guys got up at arms and asked me who my team was, why was I talking shit about the Patriots, etc. When I told them I was a Pats fan they didn't believe me, they accused me of being a Steelers fan. Why I would lie about it is beyond me.

They were a sewer. And a ton of streaming links. No great loss. I think sewer is too much for the threads I saw. Yeah, some back and forth between idiots, but I also saw some great comments taking apart the argument the reporter had made.

First major one I saw, sport related, was the whole forums closing on NFL.Com (yes, the official NFL site had forums at some point).
To this day it still had the most epic thread I've ever seen on any site. It was in the Fantasy Football section and the title was "My 13 years old is in tears because of NFL.com". It was 100% real, a dad complaining about how his Internet issues combined with the draft process for the Fantasy League, resulted in a spoiled moment for his 13 years old daughter and him. 40+ pages and everything from football to family values to cats to Jesus. The actual OP left after page 3 but it kept rolling.
Anyway, it happened about 5 years ago, if my memory is good but I do remember that the reasons listed were exactly what we were given for IMDB and all the others (like Cyberpresse).
The usual "times have changed", "the experience isn't good anymore for our users", "It costs money and time"... I don't need to translate all that do I?

You could get rid of comments on all SM posts and little of value would be lost. Just a lot of personal insults, ignorance and trolling.
