Why? Was he not very good? There have been cases of ex-NBA players going completely broke. It seems they are not that good in money management. However, in this case it doesn't seem that he was having any major financial worry as he was continuing his basketball career in Europe and was currently at contract with BC Khimki Moscow Region which is among top 5 clubs of Russia. It just seems that he was a bit foolish to get involved in whatever got him killed unless he was totally innocent.
