Strangely, I have not yet mentioned my favorite movie in the universe. In Wild Strawberries (1957) dir: Ingmar Bergman, the aged Dr. Eberhard Isak Borg (brilliantly played by the veteran film director Victor Sjöström) is motoring across Sweden to accept an honorary degree. His life is assessed in dreams and flashbacks, and the people he meets, some of whom accompany him part or all of the way, work a belated change in his psyche. They include three not always tactful students: But as one of them is Bibi Andersson we will forgive them, as Dr Borg obviously did by the end of his journey: He also picks up a desperately unhappy wrangling couple after their car is wrecked. Does that count as hitch-hiking?:

I couldn’t find a picture of the hitch-hiking, but how about this curious pair? From Orson Welles’ Ghost Story (a.k.a. Return to Glennascaul), 1951. I saw it as a kid on a tape that also had Three Cases of Murder, which I’ve mentioned here before. Guess I was an Orson fan before I even knew who he was! The ghost story in question, by the way, was also famously filmed for The Twilight Zone, though of course that’s TV. Welles first performed this classic story as an episode on the SUSPENSE radio program in 1942. Very creepy tale.

It is interesting that you mention it is your outright favourite movie as it also the single most favourite movie of my friend who introduced me to Bergman. I think I am split between it and Seventh Seal (1957) as being my fav Bergman movie and it would rank all-time 3rd or 4th favourite movie for me after Sansho dayu (1954) and Ordet (1955). Wild Strawberries (1957) is indeed an amazing amazing once in a lifetime movie.

Montgomery Clift is seen hitchhiking under the credits and in the opening moments of A Place In the Sun. And who zips right past him in the very next shot? Why, it's Elizabeth Taylor herself in her sporty Caddie convertible.

In her first screen credit Cloris Leachman plays Christina Bailey, a startling opening scene in Kiss Me Deadly (1955) Guaranteed a ride with this hitch-hike style... Especially as she was naked under the raincoat. I thought I had already mentioned this scene, but it was in the recent Cloris Leachman thread. Great start to a movie and to a career.

In Three Into Two Won't Go (1969), Judy Geeson plays a young hitchhiker who muscles her way into the marriage of Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom. Directed by Brit theatre grandee Peter Hall, I remember this as one of the best British movies of the 1960s, so I am surprised to see its rating of 5.8 on IMDb. Not available on DVD so I will not get the chance to become disillusioned. Hi there london777 Many thanks for your great recs, I really like the look of this film, and hope to it see soon !

It's nearly 50 years since I last saw it so it may not be all that. I have found that I have had more disappointments re-watching '60s movies than from any other decade. I think that as a young and pretentious poseur I got swept up in the "revolutionary, rule-breaking" hype. That is particular true of the French New wave films which we drooled over then. Nowadays I have more respect for the more traditional French film-makers they were rebelling against. Still, I would like to see it again, so if you can find a source, please let me know.

Scarecrow (1973)
Such an underrated movie! Dunno why it doesn't get more attention. Would like to re-watch it again, maybe even own it. Fits in with the sad ending of other films from that era and genre.

In Hick (2011) dir: Derick Martini (who he?), 13-year-old Chloë Grace Moretz runs away from her squalid Nebraska home, aiming for Las Vegas, and gets into scrapes with pimps and sex murderers. ("Posh" English actor Eddie Redmayne strangely pops up with a stetson and curious accent). There are quite a few scenes in which she hitch-hikes:

Roadgames (1981) Richard Franklin. A stylish and atmospheric Australian thriller The biggest budget Oz movie at the time, tells the tale of an interstate truck driver who plays a cat-and-mouse game with a mysterious serial killer preying on hitch-hikers. The desolate Nullarbor highway is built on a flat desert plain that crosses Southern Australia east to west, not a safe place for lone travellers. The truckie is Pat (Stacy Keach) and Jamie Lee Curtis plays a hiker that he picks up. The casting of American actress Curtis caused some concern with the Australian actors union , it was a demand from the American distributors that she be the co-star. For what its worth , Quentin Tarantino has said it is one of his favourite films... End Play (1976) directed by Tim Burstall . A not so good Australian thriller tells the story of Hitch-hiker Delvene Delaney ..

Mention of The Accused (1949) dir: William Dieterle, in dagoldenage's 1949 films thread, reminded me that Loretta Young hitches a lift with a trucker near the start. For a while it looks as though he will be a significant witness but, if I remember correctly, this plot-line fizzles out. (Ages since I saw it).

In 'The Muppet Movie' (1979), Kermit and Fozzy cross paths with Big Bird who's hitch-hiking his way to New York City to enter public television. A morose Big Bird later tries to hitch a ride in 'Follow That Bird' (1985).

The Long Hot Summer 1958Ben Quick hitches a ride with Miss Clara and Miss Eula in their spiffy little convertible Click the link to see a collection of multi-language posters. Orson Welles is nearly un-recognizable. Occasionally his voice sounds like his old self.

Nightmare in the Sun (1965) directed by John Derek and Marc Lawrence features John Derek being framed by the bent sheriff (Aldo Ray) of a desert town. Although Derek is only seen hitchhiking in the opening scenes (in a truck driven by Sammy Davis Jr), he is never identified by name, just as "The Hitchhiker" in the cast list, so it merits inclusion here. He does get a lift from Ursula Andress soon after, but he does not solicit it. She solicits him. This is a bad movie, but with a lot of talking points so I may write separately about it later.
