Strictly speaking, there is no hitch-hiking in Early Spring (1956) dir: Yasujirô Ozu, but there is "hitching" during a hike. Does that count? In a key scene which starts the plot rolling, married man Sugiyama (Ryô Ikebe) and office colleagues go for a weekend hike. He is persuaded by office flirt Kaneko (Keiko Kishi) to hitch a lift with her in a passing truck, which triggers an extra-marital affair.

Set to a thumping rock and roll soundtrack, this brilliant minimalist film is just 62 mins. The droll tale follows two aging Finnish rockers, one a coffee addict, Valto the other a vodka-soaked mechanic, Reino as they hit the road in their Soviet-built Volga. Along their way two women hitch a ride, Estonian Tatjana and Russian Klavdia. Sharing no common language shy Valto & Reino are completely clueless as to what to do next with their friendly hikers... Beautifully composed , a comical classic gem from Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki. a great favourite of mine.... Pidä huivista kiinni, Tatiana, Take Care of Your Scarf, Tatiana (1994)
