I'm sick of people who only listen to whatever current trash is being forced down their throats on the radio. Why are these ignorant people limiting themselves to listening to like the same 5 [bad] pop songs over and over and over and over and over again? It is a really sad thing. They are missing out on a whole world full of music.
I don't understand it, brahs. What is causing them to do it?

Over on the Music General board, one poster wrote there were no good rock bands today. I replied, "You're either joking or haven't been paying attention" and listed four bands formed in this decade. His response was, "And on what radio stations do they play them? I was referring to music on the radio." I wrote, "Probably no radio stations play those bands. But does it matter? Radio is becoming increasingly irrelevant." Apparently, he had nothing more to say on the subject, because he never posted in his own thread again.

Probably because it's easy--you don't have to think about it, and it functions as a "virtual companion" of sorts. I'd assume that people who do this aren't really huge music fans. That's not to say that they don't enjoy music--they wouldn't listen, obviously, if they didn't enjoy music, but they're probably folks who aren't that picky (which is a good thing in my opinion), and who don't care enough about it to buy a lot of albums, to "study" particular artists and research other things they were involved with, explore their influences, etc.
The weird thing, given that, is when you run into someone on a music board, especially a dedicated music board (a board that only has music forums), who seems to mostly listen to the radio.
Also, you'd think that maybe some of these folks would at least explore Internet radio, streaming, Sirius-XM, etc., where there's a lot more variety than there is on commercial, terrestrial/broadcast radio. Not that I think there's a problem if someone only listens to broadcast radio, as long as they're not complaining about it. If they're complaining about it, there are a lot of other options now that don't require much work.
It actually seems a bit odd to me that commercial, terrestrial/broadcast radio stations are surviving. It's difficult for me to imagine that there would be anyone under the age of, say, 27-28 who listens to broadcast radio much, and I wouldn't think you'd run into people who still listen to it a lot until you start getting into folks in their later 40s at least. But that's not the primary demographic that advertisers are going after. I'm surprised that broadcast radio stations aren't folding left and right a la the way that magazines have been going out of business.

I'm surprised that broadcast radio stations aren't folding left and right a la the way that magazines have been going out of business. The death (or at least decline) of broadcast radio is already happening. As I posted earlier, iHeartMedia, the number one radio company in the U.S., declared bankruptcy, and a major selloff of radio stations is expected. Furthermore Cumulus Media, the number two radio company, was already bankrupt. Not too surprising, since a study released last year suggests that traditional radio could be dead in ten years. The study also notes that, "Younger music listeners have increasingly turned to sites like YouTube to discover new artists and songs."

I pretty much never listen to the radio anymore. Even in the car I listen to my own playlists. I almost only use spotify to listen to music. With a few exceptions, it has any song you could possibly think of from 1918 until 2018. I find out about new music through sites like rateyourmusic.

Because they’re ignorant. They don’t know anything else. They think that if something is playing on the radio then it must be the best music has to offer. “This song’s always playing on the radio therefore it must be one of the best songs” “I’ve never listened to this song, but it doesn’t get any airplay so it must be shit” It’s really sad.

It's their loss, but it certainly doesn't bother me that people still do it.

Oh, who knows...or cares, for that matter? People do all sorts of things others find hard to fathom, like calling everyone "brah."

I'm not too keen on the idea of paying for radio to be honest.
I don't seek music out either. I listen to whatever I come across on the radio, online, or TV and movies.

I can see how many would generally stick to the radio because of it's convenience/easy of use etc. but if I actually like a song I want a high quality copy of it which basically means the CD(or FLAC rip(or any lossless audio format) of it online ; which is the same thing (assuming it was ripped from the actual audio CD you buy in the store)). when I listen to music it's almost always from a proper source. p.s. but in general there are more movies ill go out of my way to re-watch than this is music ill go out of my way to listen to even though there is still a fair chunk of music ill go out of my way to listen to. Nicko's NoseI get your point and all. but... I would imagine that in general, when looking at all radio stations out there (like classic rock/modern pop and just about everything else that has a fairly popular free radio station) they tend to stick to what the masses like and I don't really see that as a bad thing overall because when you start to get songs that most people like, it's a safer bet in general vs venturing too far off the radar. sure, you can still find some quality music here and there that's not too mainstream but I am sure you get the gist ; it's basically more of a odds thing as it's kind of like movies as if you go too far away from the mainstream (or semi-mainstream) your likely just going to watch largely forgettable movies. p.s. but if your making fun of this modern pop 'music', then ill pretty much join you in the making fun of those people thing
