I need evidence.
I like EDtv, but it's a guilty pleasure, not great. It isn't remarkable, I believe any run of the mill director could have made it.
I hated Davinci Code. I hated that Moby Dick movie. I fell asleep during that racecar film.
Now Solo!!?!? Jesus!

Everything I've seen by him (that I recall) sucked. He destroyed the Langdon franchise.

He's competent. To reach the level of "good" though I think you have to be bringing something new to the table, however subtle or small, and I don't think he's done that. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd say "Cinderella Man" and "A Beautiful Mind" are enough evidence that he's a competent director

Half of what I've seen has been serviceable and the rest pretty good. Hell, I liked Solo. And Rush for that matter.

Two. Best picture and director for A Beautiful Mind.

I've always felt Ron has been a Spielberg-wannabe.

I mostly like his earlier stuff such as Splash, Night Shift, Gung Ho, Cocoon, and Parenthood.

Ron Howard is one of many directors that has tackled almost every film genre: science fiction, drama, comedy, fantasy, documentary, and action/adventure. You can always start with his greatest hits: Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Splash, Cocoon, Parenthood, and Frost/Nixon. I would even recommend Backdraft, which has an excellent cast and realistic fire effects.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I say that to reach the level of GREAT you have to bring something new to the table. You don't have to do that to be a GOOD director. I'd even argue that Ron Howard did bring something new to the table with Backdraft, which still to this day has the best fire effects ever put on film.

Yes. I think he is a very talented director. I like Splash a lot. I love Apollo 13. I love A Beautiful Mind. I even enjoyed Rush. I haven't seen all his films, though. I want to see Frost/Nixon and Cinderella Man and a few others. I didn't like Cocoon or Backdraft as much, though they have much to commend them.
The Da Vinci Code was a disappointment, mostly through casting I think, but even so it features a beautiful ending and one of my favorite movie scores.

Not one of my favorite Hans Zimmer scores, but still very good.
My favorite performance from Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon is in Inferno.
