Proud yes. Hopeful? Pump the brakes. A quality 3-1 result over Belgium on Saturday would go a long way for their psyche. England should ditch the baggage of the previous 28yrs by ever injecting youth into this squad, otherwise this Kane bunch will be absolutely no different than the Beckham-Gerrard led eras.

I can't think of any context in which this tourney performance from England doesn't get a big tick. You would have to be the most entitled "born to rule" twat in existence (England should never lose to anybody) or an incurable doormat for the rest of the world (nothing I'm associated with could possibly be successful) to not rate on OT loss in the semi finals of the WC (for a team who hasn't been to one in 28 years!) an unqualified success.

Of course they should. Getting to a WC semifinal is no mean achievement that really doesn't happen that often. As long as the don't get carried away with it they should be alright. Every team in the right side of the draw got lucky as the left side was so stacked. So as long as England fans are realistic about what actually happened in this tourney and don't place huge expectations on this young team then it could be a real shot in the arm for the international squad. Obviously this is the English public so I'm not gonna hold my breath on that one.

It was fine, it's nothing to complain about, but most England sides of the past 20 years would have stood a good chance of making it to at least the semis with a draw as easy as England got. Throughout the tournament they didn't play a single competitive game against any top side and they were fortunate to beat Colombia.
I think people got really carried away to be honest. Pickford made a few decent saves against Sweden and kept his first clean sheet of the tournament, people were proclaiming that he should win the Golden Gloves. Kane had a good game against Tunisia then scored a few penalties and an accidental goal and people were acting like he was the second coming of Ronaldo. Southgate looks good in a waistcoat, played a weird formation and beat some crap teams, people reacted by singing songs about how he turns them on and dressing up as him - the fact that whenever he made a substitution it usually made things worse went unremarked on.
You can understand it getting caught up in the hype of a good run, but in the cold light of day it wasn't that impressive.

Pathetic. Can’t even win a sport you blabber about endlessly to us boorish unsophisticated ‘Muricans. If you ain’t first you’re last. Stick to royal weddings and Monty Python and leave real sports to the countries that actually win once in a while.

Or do what Americans do and choose such shit awful sports that no one else wants to play, so by default you become number one.

What he means is that you guys do not compete at a higher level in a true international sport that is played competitively by many countries. Yeah, basketball is played by many countries. But there is disparity between America and all other teams. It's not a competitive international sport.
The true international team sports that nations seek glory in are football, cricket, field hockey and rugby union. None of them is dominated by any one team like basketball. They are truly competitive team sports. I do not think that America does well in any famous competitive team sport.
Yeah, in women sports you do.

Yeah, in women sports you do. England has won a rugby world cup, won a soccer world cup and made it to finals of 3 cricket world cup. It has been a great cricketing nation even if not won a world cup in it. It's hockey team can also compete with big boys of field hockey even though England unlike Australia hasn't got a good record in hockey.

England made it to a semi final of a World Cup. With a young team no less. Definitely good reason to be proud, even with that unavoidable feeling of having missed out on more after that match.
Best four in a world cup, excellently done!

Yes, but people shouldn't go crazy about it. We had a fortunate draw and still didn't beat a big team in a high pressure game. The chance was there on a plate to beat Croatia and reach a final, and England did what they always do when in a position of promise when facing a team with a bit of class. It felt like a vintage Golden Generation performance in the end, with the inviting of pressure from the opposition by booting the ball long and not having the composure to keep it and pass it. Only difference is it didn't go to penalties; they beat us before it did.

They made it a lot farther than the other teams. What is really there for England to be upset about? The semifinal is already an achievement in itself, they done about fine.

Best four in a world cup, excellently done! Tunisia and Panama in the group stage (lost against Belgium) Narrow victories* over Colombia (penalties, and Colombia was the group winners of a very weak group) and Sweden (which was even beaten by a desolate German team). If they had at least one heavy weight like Belgium with Brazil, or France with Argentina...but they got actually a free pass. The highest ranked team was Tunisia as 21th in the world. Croatia is no. 20 while England is no. 12, hence they should have won but they didn't. They would have made it to the final without beating a single traditional powerhouse, nor a top ten team. They were ok. Semi final was more than expected, but the performance considering the actual opponents was slightly underwhelming. No top ten team (the only one was Belgium) beaten, no top 20 team regulary beaten, no traditional powerhouse played/beaten, and lost to a far lower ranked team: Tunesia - 21 won Panama - 55 won Belgium - 3 lost Colombia - 16 draw (=> pen) Sweden - 24 won Croatia - 20 lost (a.e.t.) *
