As much as I appreciate your efforts, this poll is lacking too many. Where's The Matrix? Where's Minority Report? Where's Dark City? Where's Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Where's 12 Monkeys? Where's The Road Warrior? Where's The Thing? Where's Innerspace? Where's Alien and Aliens? Where's The Terminator movies? Where's the Star Trek movies? Where's Avatar? Where's Donnie Darko? I'll just add on your list Where's The Prestige? Where's Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? Where's Inception? Where's Children of Men? Where's Her? Where's Back to the Future? Where's Interstellar? Where's The Fifth Element? Where's Arrival? Where's District 9? Where's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial?

The whining I hear so far about only including big budget favorites is reflected so far in the votes, in which three mainstream popular big budget movies pushed by the "powers that be" (not saying they're bad, just that they're thrust into circulation by the dork in every group who has to be with the majority).
Just naming mainstream movies would have been a poor poll. I tried to include as many different types as I could, from "iconic scenes movies" to "cult sci-fi" to "mainstream" to include as many different styles as I could, including some I really thought were dull. You can't get any duller and Hollywood mainstream than "2001" in this list, and yet that is the leader in the poll.
That's the movie Siskel and Ebert would no doubt pick, and the critics who play "control freak" would no doubt want Jurassic and Blade Runner to be second and third in some order. And there's a lot to be said for Jurassic and Blade Runner, but they are "mainstream" critic choices.
Which means that it goes beyond coincidence that the mainstream critic choices are being voted up. Disappointing that there are so few people here who can make up their own mind about anything.
But I will not alter the outcome. It is what it is, and it reflects on the posters more than on the movies when it's this obvious.
I just tell it like it is. The winner is looking to be Space Odyssey, and yet the ones voting for it are still whining. Incredible.

Another one missing from your list which no-one has yet mentioned. and which I would rate ahead of most on your list, is Total Recall (1990) Agree on Total Recall (though I wouldn't put it higher than Blade Runner), also all of the star trek films are missing, that ant film, the star wars films etc.

Taking the lead now is BLADE RUNNER over 2001 and JURASSIC PARK.
Blade is a little less Hollywood than the others, so that speaks well for you guys. I still don't care for it, but I can respect the choice at least.
What BLADE RUNNER does have is more interesting minor characters than the mainstream movies. I do like that, but there aren't as many interesting and well developed, inspired, credibly motivated minor characters as the great sci-fi classics like Them, the 1953 War of the Worlds, and First Spaceship on Venus. I still can't believe I left that last one off the list, but I had to include a variety.

I saw them all starting with Planet of the Apes. Good movie. Then came 2001 - impressive, but kind of a convoluted storyline.
Let me assure you kiddies, there was NOTHING like the cultural phenomenon that was Star Wars.
There was nothing like it before, and it influenced everything that came after.
Yes, yes, I know it was a simple story based on common tropes from mythology. So what? All of a sudden you're Nietzsche?
The visual/musical spectacle in 70mm dolby simply took my breath away. (I saw it in the theater when it was originally released)
The audience reaction was the same everywhere: stunned.
The ripples still echo today.
Greatest sci-fi of all time? Like Highlander, there is only one. I guess you had to be there.

There are some really puzzling inclusions - Nightflyers, In the Year 2889, 12 To The Moon etc. and omissions - Tarkovsky, Moon, many others already mentioned - in this list.
My personal Top 3 - The Thing, Alien, CE3K are not even there for consideration

Personally, of the fantastical films from '77 I saw back in the day, I found Close Encounters and Sinbad & The Eye Of The tiger, far more exciting and impressive. I honestly think had it not been for the merchandise that soon followed I would have lost interest in Star Wars as a child

Agreed that fantasy can be considered a sub genre of science fiction, but the fact is that I had to select a good cross section to include a limited number, and I had to exclude sub genres like fantasy and the iconic monsters (like Frankenstein and Mothra).
