I always thought Billy Gunn/Mr. Ass was going to be revealed as the culprit as he was the only member of DX that was nowhere to be seen when Austin was rundown. I read not too long ago that Big Show was originally intended to be the culprit but Vince and Co. didn't like his backstage attitude or something along those lines
now on to my next question if you were in charge of this storyline who would you have had as the culprit?
my choice would've been Chris Benoit (as the driver) Kurt Angle (as the accomplice)

I had my suspicions of the Undertaker at the time. He really had it in for Stone Cold from late 1998 and throughout 1999 before they were both gone. I thought he might've tried one last attempt to try and end his career as well as his life, while he was supposed to be out, and then confess when Stone Cold returned.
Anyway, i've discussed who might've been a good culprit with someone before, and I thought the Big Boss Man was a good recommendation. He was another one who didn't like Stone Cold much, and at the time of Survivor Series 1999, he was in a storyline with the Big Show, mocking the death of his dad, and this wasn't long after he killed Al Snow's dog and fed it to him. The Big Boss Man was definitely dirty enough to pull off a hit and run attack on Stone Cold.
Honorable mention goes out to Test. He was an up and comer, looking to get his shot at real power marrying the boss' daughter before Triple H did, and maybe he would've at least been able to beat him for the title after taking Stone Cold out, and then reveal himself later, after he was well established.

I'd also give a shout out to the British Bulldog. He got kind of down and dirty when he came back in 1999, and he was always on the opposite side of the fence Stone Cold was on anyway.

I remember thinking it was and wanting it to be Billy Gunn. He seemed to fit everything going for it. I read somewhere that he was the originally planned person but he wasn't healthy enough to return at the time or something rather.
I do remember hating everything that came out of that story though. Having it be Rikishi "doing it for the Rock" and then revealing HHH as the mastermind behind it was just lazy for me.

Late fall of 2000 before Rikishi was revealed as the culprit they actually did tease Taker as being the possible culprit both Austin and Taker had a staredown backstage in the locker room and Taker looked up at Austin and said "Don't look at me like that man you know I wasn't there that night I was taking some time off" I like Test being a possible option too before Russo left WWF it was originally planned for Test to join DX I could definitely see Test being revealed as the culprit if Russo had stayed on board

I feel like when it immediately occurred I was expecting someone who would be unexpected get over easy without strong matches like Ken Shamrock or even Bob Holly. Rikishi was obviously a cop-out, a VKM trademark. That HIAC where he falls into the hay or whatever was a soft match, esp considering where the HIAC had been previously + that epic roster of participants.

Rikishi as the culprit was doomed to fail from the start it was obvious the guy had reached his ceiling as a face. but having a guy "who got his biggest pop by rubbing his butt in his opponents face" and turning him heel by inserting him into a feud with one of the companys top stars at the time was a huge mistake im not saying Rikishi wouldn't have made a decent heel eventually. but Austin being his first opponent at the beginning of his heel turn wasn't a wise move unfortunately Ken Shamrock was no longer with the company in late 99 when this storyline began he left the company a month early in October of that year during his feud with Y2J

I dunno. I wiki'd the roster lineup & tried to remember guys I thought they'd be easy pushing.

the obvious culprits Taker, Rock. Foley. Vince or Triple H. were too lazy and dull im glad the company never revealed either as the driver.
Angle being revealed as the driver couldve been interesting as he debuted on that same night.
Billy Gunn wouldve been another interesting choice but the company never could get him over enough as a heel outside of his run as a new age outlaw.
if you believe internet rumors Paul Wright (Big Show) was originally intended to be the culprit but the company didnt like the cocky attitude he had of himself plus he was in OVW losing weight by the time Austin returned.
i wouldve had Chris Benoit be revealed as the culprit he debuted almost three months after the Rattlesnake was run down who knows perhaps him and his radical friends were looking to make an impact by taking out one of the top stars.
