It seems like they cough purely for the sake of being obnoxious and annoying. Coughing should be rare. I can't remember the last time I legitimately required to cough.
Are these people being obnoxious jerks on purpose or are they ridden with disease?
Thoughts?

my friend can't stop constantly coughing. I think his heart condition is part of the reason.
But the main reason is everyone in his damn family but him smokes.
I call him Choke-a-hantas

I clear my throat often because I feel a discomfort in my throat. If that makes me an annoying piece of crap, then ok.

Many people cough frequently due to allergies--not everybody who's allergic sneezes. Also, some people are more sensitive to air pollution than others. I assure you that when I cough, I don't do it to annoy others...most of the time.

Really, that gives me some kind of indication of the measure of the moron that you are. The measure is that you are a complete imbecile. I've been asthmatic since I was born, 68 years ago. So yes, I go around coughing because it brings SUCH PLEASURE to my lungs. When I cough, my lungs cum. You may just be the biggest idiot on this board. But you have some serious competition, you fucking asshole. Love, Mel Torme

It is possible they smoke a lot which can cause you to cough more than the average person or it could be some form of Tourette Syndrome that is beyond their control.

There's a pretty funny story of the opera singer Jon Vickers actually stopping in the middle of an aria to shout to an audience member who'd been hacking nearly non-stop throughout the show to "Quit your damn coughing, already!!!". I don't recall the opera this happened in, but there's apparently a recording of it: a friend of mine who's an opera buff and big Vickers fan finds this story hilarious, and I have to admit I wish that sometimes onstage performers would do that sort of thing more often.

I call him Choke-a-hantas I don't think there's a connection between the heart and coughing? That's messed up, brah if his family constantly smoke near him. Very rude and disrespectful. Hopefully he can get out of there soon.

I have no clue why the OP seems to think the coughing is for no reason.

I have no clue why the OP seems to think the coughing is for no reason. Key words: some people I didn't say all people who cough cough for no reason. Obviously smokers or people who are sick cough because they need to. But believe it or not there are people out there who cough when it's not required.

I'm sure some folks like to call attention to themselves, but I can't know everyone's circumstances enough to call something unnecessary.

Post nasal drip. Allergies. Asthma. Bronchitis. Sinus pressure and infections. Pulmonary ailments.
Some are just too stubborn to go to a doctor. I worked with one of these guys. Hacking the entire morning! Since he and I have the same job I knew insurance wasn't a problem.

My dad had a heart bypass last month and was told to cough regularly to make sure his lungs stayed clear.

I know what you're talking about OP. Some people do it ("cough cough") to draw attention to themselves or to annoy or mock someone else. It's an immature thing to do in the latter context, like an alternative way of laughing at someone. Immature people do it; I notice teenagers do it a lot. (No offense to people who cough for health related reasons, that's not what the OP is on about.)
