I think they could definitely use at least a few more buttons. Especially important for modern games. I guess the only tricky part is figuring out where they would be placed.
Thoughts?

Developers often don't utilize the buttons they have well enough. If you don't have enough buttons and you're not developing something like an old-school Sierra text-based game, you're probably not streamlining the core mechanics of your game well enough or it should just be on a keyboard. Personally, I think the best controller of all time is the Xbox 360 controller. That's 10 real buttons, 2 analog sticks, 2 analog triggers, a D-pad which can be another 4 buttons. That's more than enough for most games. But if I had to expand it, I think you could put another two, smaller buttons slightly beneath the A and B buttons as well as a larger button underneath the left analog for some quick action sort of button. Additional shoulders or toggles on the underside would just be a chore.

bartlesbyIt's a solid controller except it's biggest flaw is it's d-pad which is where just about all other consoles top it. but if you don't need to use the d-pad much then it's a solid controller and hard to beat in it's all around feel. p.s. in terms of d-pad I think Nintendo is king. too bad they are not a serious contender though for the more mainstream serious gamer types as Nintendo has not been a major player in that regard since the N64 days and older as back in those days it was Sega/Sony vs Nintendo, pretty much with it being mainly Sega vs Nintendo. but once the XBox came along in 2001 it was pretty much Microsoft vs Sony with the XBox vs PS2 to date as that's pretty much the time when consoles became modern in 2000 with PS2 and 2001 with XBox. I know PS1 came out in 1995 but that was sort of a half-assed modern console and with N64 (came out in 1996) was better in some ways(although the cartridge was a limiting factor of N64 on some level due to a lack of storage space which obviously PS1 was superior there), it's controller is not suited for modern shooters etc. so I guess you can pretty much credit Sony with the basic modern controller design with the dual analog sticks. but I always preferred XBox over Playstation in general.
