This was the movie that was the inspiration for the classic comedy Airplane! I had been thinking of wanting to watch it recently and then thankfully TCM broadcast it and I recorded and watched it. I couldn't help but laugh at scenes even though they were serious because they reminded me of the spoof scene in Airplane! And believe it or not, the catch line of, "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking" is lifted right from ZH! I also found myself saying lines from A! which are not at all in ZH! like when Joey is visiting with the pilot in the cockpit I would say, "Joey, have you seen any gladiator movies?"
Anyone else here seen both and have similar reactions or share any other thoughts and opinions you have on these movies.
This is a really awesome video someone put together showing how the two are similar with side by side comparisons of lines and scenes.

Long ago we had a thread on the most unintentionally hilarious films ever, My introduction was Zero Hour , , Zero Hour stands alone, it is absolutely hilarious and begins with a serious goof in the flashbacks, Elroy Hirsch as the captain a riot, the overblown melodramatics !, Linda Darnell does great deadpan, Sterling Hayden's ground control tops the lot,his the sweaty brow, his clipboard so funny .. I found the film Airplane distasteful remake of the original and no where near as funny. Even the stills crack me up...

What was the goof in the flashbacks? When Ted Stryker is flashing back to his men crashing their planes into the ground, the scenes show planes with German insignia on their wings. Stryker was in the Canadian Air Force.

For most of Airplane, there would be a line from "Zero Hour" and then an added "punch" for a laugh, ex. the man offers the old lady a drink from his flask and she turns up her nose. That was in ZO. Airplane then added the shot of the old lady sniffing a line of coke.
One great line, however, straight from Zero Hour was used as the punch line. I refer to this screamer:

I couldn't help but laugh at scenes even though they were serious because they reminded me of the spoof scene in Airplane! I experienced the exact same thing... I too watched "Zero Hour!" years after seeing the movie "Airplane!"... and even knowing the movie was supposed to be serious, I just kept cracking up, because I keep thinking about "Airplane!" while watching the film. It's sad that I couldn't enjoy the film, as it was meant to be seen.

I'll have to look for that. Maybe they used stock footage of model planes crashing from another movie? I agree with your earlier comments. Sometimes it's real easy to laugh at a movie when it's over the top dramatic.

I refer to this screamer: Yeah and when the stewardess is looking for a doctor, in A! Leslie Nielsen is sitting there with his stethoscope in his ears. And I kept on thinking of the line when the doctor asked what everyone had for dinner. "There were two choices. Fish or meat." "Oh yes, I remember. I had lasagne."

I wonder if it is the first airplane drama movie where a passenger takes over the controls and gets talked down into landing. TBH, I keep on waiting for it to happen in real life because it has happened so much in these airplane disaster movies.

Something like that happened to me with a movie that was a bit more prestigious than Zero Hour; I mean the 1938 film of Shaw's play Pygmalion. I enjoyed it but kept hearing song cues from My Fair Lady that were not followed by any music. I had to will myself to get used to it.

So looks like my only option for watching this in un-butchered version is pay $3 for ppv or God Knows how much for a dvd. Pity, I wouldn't mind seeing it.
