48 teams in the world cup is just stupid. 32 teams is enough.
World Cup in Qatar is also stupid. M

Qatar Airways stewardesses have been prominent throughout Russia 2018, even being paraded as a backdrop on the presentation stage after the Final today. Official Partner of FIFA. World Cup staged there in 2022. 48 teams = loads more revenue. You don't need me to bleat on about it. It's crystal clear. It's FIFA. It's money. I voted both equally.
QA contract ends in 2022 after the World Cup. No surprise there then.

While tempted to pick equally dumb, i find the 48 team concept marginally more asenine of the two so I picked 48 teams.

Competitively 48 teams makes as much sense as scrapping the group stage altogether and just making it straight knockout.
The format they've chosen makes it worse. It is inevitable that the final group games will have two teams entering into matches with a single outcome being mutually beneficial.
There's no way of doing this without ruining the competition.

Is it safe to assume 12 groups of 4? Top 2 (24 total) go through from each. Top 8 first place teams get a bye into a second knockout stage while the remaining 16 play in a first knockout stage. Such a setup would guarantee that a game like France-Denmark's effort won't happen.

Nope 16 groups of 3. Top 2 go through to a 32 team stage. 12 groups of 4 also suggested, but still with a round of 32. Basically the old 24 team format only twice as big.

You forgot the obvious one...
WC 2022 will be played November & December. Never mind where it's played, that'll be fcuked on the calendar alone.
WC Final match played a week before Christmas yes? Does not compute.

Qatar. A country with zero footballing heritage. Stadiums built by slave labour. The obvious corruption and bribery involved in Qatar winning the bid. The fact that it cannot be held in summer without killing players.
The whole tournament is an overt farce and human rights disgrace.

When the 2022 World Cup was awarded to Qatar, I was the only one on the old boards who didn’t think it was a bad thing. I liked the idea of the World Cup going to a region of the world that had never hosted any of the two biggest sporting events before, I believed their promises that they would have a solution for the heat problem (something involving a stadium-wide ventilation system combined with a cooling mist of some sort), and I figured that if they were willing to spend an outrageous fortune building stadiums that were never going to be used again, that was their problem. Of course if I had known that they would use slave labour to build the stadiums, my opinion would have been different.

I intend to boycott them both for different reasons. It worked quite well for this WC: Only Turkey II's prolonged torture and humiliation (15 min), the final dealing with the Russians (5 mins), and enjoying the Brits get their kicks (5 min).
Since I couldn't care less about Qatar I could cut these five minutes, the Brits might get kicked out in the group stage, and Turkey II might not even qualify for it.
