I saw this in theaters and honestly didn't think much of it. I've tried rewatching it a few times over the years and it still hasn't clicked. Some funny parts here and there, sure, but not a classic in my book.
Honestly, I prefer the follow-up film: Me, Myself and Irene.

Honestly I thought it sucked. I've never understood the hype around it.

Honestly I thought it sucked. I've never understood the hype around it. It is one of the most quotable comedies ever, but it is also a product of the times, much like Dumb and Dumber. They are both in my favorite comedies ever list, but I can understand someone not liking them today. I saw them both in high school and loved them so much. Times were different then. No internet. No cell phones. No RT or Metacritic or IMDB. No streaming online. Basically, we had to buy the VHS and watch it over and over again. I am not even sure if I would like them if they came out at the theaters today. Who knows? To me, they are comedy classics.

I remember when Something About Mary was in theaters, you couldn't get away from it. Everyone was talking about it and it looked so stupid. I eventually saw it on VHS and it didn't do anything for me. That's comedy for you I suppose, it either works for you or it doesn't.

Yeah I feel like comedy is the most subjective out of all the genres. Everyone finds different things funny. For instance, is Airplane funnier than Dumb and Dumber or Zoolander? Some would find the question insulting either way. It all depends on your generation and sense of humor. I know people say all genres are like this, but they really are not. For instance, drama is much less subjective in my opinion. If someone tells me that Godfather 3 is better than the first two they are wrong, opinions be damned, but if someone told me Blockers was better than Meet The Parents, it is hard for me to argue humor.

My family had internet by 1997-98, though back then it was slow and limited (as I assume it was for most folks back then). IMDB was there too, but I believe the message boards weren't available until 2000-01.
I agree watching movies felt different back then.
