Correct me if I'm wrong, having last seen it a few years ago... Doesn't the opening make it obvious that Holden is the man in the pool? I think it would be way better if this was held back as a surprise at the end of the movie.

Now one of my Top 10 favorite movies, I'm embarrassed to admit that the first time I watched SB I didn't realize it was him in the pool at the beginning.

Yes, we are supposed to know that a dead man is narrating the movie. Wilder first considered having the narration begin while Holden's body is lying on a metal table at the morgue.

It originally opened in a morgue, with the corpses telling each other how they got there.
That's also the pool at the end of 'Rebel Without a Cause', only empty
