What are your top 10 TV shows for the entirety of the ‘60s? (It counts if the show started in the ‘60s.) Also a favorite episode—doesn’t have to be your absolute favorite, but one you really enjoy. A very difficult question, I know, I know.
I’m holed up in an office staring at a downpour outside right now, so… Anyone want to give it a go? No particular order.
My own taste tends towards pop surrealism and complex (yet comprehensible) plotting, with a good vein of humor even if it’s not a comedy. So…
The Avengers—“The Town of No Return”
Batman—“Hizzoner the Mayor/Dizzoner the Mayor”
Green Acres—“Economy Flight to Washington”
Gilligan’s Island—“The Second Ginger Grant”
The Twilight Zone—I usually choose “A Stop at Willoughby” for this, but for here I’ll choose “Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up?”
Get Smart—“My Nephew the Spy”
Mission: Impossible—offhand, “The Elixir”
The Saint—“Sibao”
Maverick—“Ghost Rider”
The Wild Wild West—“The Night of the Simian Terror”
Unfortunately, I have yet to see three shows I think I’d like very much—Patrick McGoohan’s Danger Man and The Prisoner and Sydney Newman’s Adam Adamant Lives!

Secret Agent/Dangerman The Prisoner Mission Impossible Man from UNCLE The Wild Wild West The Carol Burnett Show The Twilight Zone The Outer Limits The Avengers Alfred Hitchcock Presents (more a Fifties show, though it did last until 1962, so I'll alternate it with The Dick van Dyke Show)

Wild Wild West Andy Griffith Mission Impossible Mannix Twilight Zone I can only come up with 5. Rest don't match up, especially to WILD. I would throw Gunsmoke in there, but not sure if it counts since it started in 1955?

I am having trouble making a selection due to some confusion on definitions. The word "entirety" could be interpreted that a show had to be on during every year in the decade, but everyone, including yourself seems to be taking this to mean that the show was on in just any year of the decade. This would follow from stating that it is OK if a show started in the 60s. I guess this means that if the show continued into the 70s that it is OK to include it. Something like "Hawaii 5-O"....but this begs the question, what about shows that started in the 50s and continued into the 60s? Your inclusion of "The Twilight Zone" would appear to indicate this is OK but at least one person found this a grey area when including "Alfred Hitchcock Presents"... Then there is the request to select an episode from a show. Some TV shows are not really "episodic" such as variety shows such as "The Carol Burnett Show"...or interview shows such as "The Tonight Show" or "Meet the Press"...

My apologies for the confusion, geode, but for the purposes of this thread I don’t really require any precise definition—as long as you consider it a “’60s show,” it counts. Thus if it started in the ’50s and broadcast into the ’60s, fine, if you consider it ’60s. Very flexible with this—as is this board in general with decades.

I’ve now seen all of The Prisoner except for the last two episodes. It’s an exceptional show and well deserves to make my Top 10 list.

I’ve now seen all of The Prisoner except for the last two episodes. It’s an exceptional show and well deserves to make my Top 10 list. The early episodes of the series can be interpreted both literally and allegorically. For example, "Free for All" can be interpreted as a literal story about Number 6 running for office in the Village, but it also has a lot of social commentary on democratic elections and the media's role in them. But the series finale "Fall Out" can only be interpreted allegorically. It makes no literal sense, and contradicts earlier episodes of the series. I personally view it as a big disappointment.
