Francis Ford Coppola talks on his audio commentary about not knowing how he would end the film. He’s not kidding. Once Brando is reached, the film really doesn’t have much sense of direction or purpose. In the Redux version, I do appreciate the inclusion of Kurtz reading a TIME magazine article espousing how successful American forces are doing in Vietnam. Still, what comes before it is masterful.

Never cared for it once they reach Brando. The path there is always much more interesting.

I think it's great the whole way even after reaching Brando.

I have never seen the Redux version in whole but it sounds like the theatrical version is better overall.

I have never seen the Redux version in whole but it sounds like the theatrical version is better overall. The theatrical version does have a tighter focus. The French plantation scene in the Redux cut is fascinating but works better when viewed as a stand alone scene. The best thing about the Redux cut is the Technicolor dye transfer process; just gorgeous colors throughout.
