I think a lot depends on his health! Which there is no way of knowing at present. That's my concern...but again, I think Im right (going on memory) isnt Leonard a FA after this season!? Why would you ditch an insanely valuable piece on Demar for a guy who is probably going to LAL after this season. SAS just got a really nice piece in DeMar. I mean, they got the 7th seed without Leonard, now theyll have: Mills/Green/DeMar/Gay/Aldridge as their lineup (I believe). Im looking at this though I could be off: www.basketball-reference.com/teams/SAS/2018_depth.htmlI dont blame SAS for moving Leonard, hey Demar isnt chopped liver. Insanely solid piece. Yeah, the long term aspect of this deal seems to hurt Raptors. The only way Kawhi will stay at Toronto is if he has a very good year at Warrantor. Sportsmen usually do not want to change their teams when everything is going fine.
But kawhi may not necessarily have a very good season in 2018-19. Remember that he will stick to Toronto if he has a very good season and not just a good or satisfying season. So Raptors have got to wish that things go their way this season or next year they will be far worse off.
I agree with you that from POV of Spurs the deal may turn out to be good.

Not only that....Raptors seemed to have an issue, their weakness was the Lebrons Cavs. Well Lebron is gone. East is wide open. You got the one seed last year, and you give up Demar!? Leonard, IDK if Id even want him as a Rocket. I can't trust him but before I gave up DeMar I would have asked,"will you sign long term with us?" SO what could happen...Raptors lose Demar and could lose Leonard too. Is it championship or bust? I think this makes Philly the front runners now in the east.

Don't know if it is championship or bust because literally no one will expect GSW to still not easily win this year but it could be win eastern conference or bust situation for Toronto. If they eastern confrence then they retain kawhi or else he runs to Lakers.

Why would you go west? Why? Harden, CP3, Lebron, Curry, Durant, Klay, Cousins (If he comes back and is strong, GSW, no one is touching the 5 all star team), Aldridge, Demar, Butler, KAT, Lillard, Westbrook, George, among so many others. (Im going off the top of my head). East...now what? Ok you got Embiid, Simmons, Kyle Lowry, John Wall, K. Love, Kyrie, Olapido, Ant (guy from Mil please dont make me spell his name, lol), and...I know Im missing a few but Im going off the top of my head. To me, the west looks stacked. Look at the 8th seed last year, Minnesota.....47-35 (And again they play more western conference teams) they'd been the 6th seed in the east. Imagine what theyd been if they played eastern teams....could they have nudged two more wins? I think so, makes them the 5th seed. IDK why players aren't going to the east. Regardless....I dont like this deal for the Raptors. Too big of a risk for my blood. It be like we trade Harden for Lebron, but we only get Lebron for a season. While Lebron is probably a superior player...one season!? Yea, no ty.

Who cares, big fish to dangle for decent returns.
DeRozan had no story left to write in Toronto & I'll personally be surprised if he plays as well without Lowry with whom he's built years of chemistry.

He'll play. He has to prove he's healthy and a leader. Even if his feeling is he can just go to L.A. after the year. He's a punk. He either punked out on his team - or he's hiding how serious his injury may be (and somebody correct me if I'm wrong - he had to pass a physical for the trade to go through) - nobody knows because he never talks which was commendable at first - but not commendable with all the drama last year and this nonsense. Open your mouth - defend yourself and your actions. Prediction - He falls flat on his face this year in Toronto. Granted he's with an All-Star PG in Lowry - PGs in basketball hit the wall like RBs in football - and Lowry is getting 'up there'. When did Kawhi Leonard become the 2nd coming of Dr. J? Because he had a couple of great seasons under arguably the greatest coach in 'ALL' of sports Pop? I never root for a player to injure himself or wish badly upon anybody - but I'm rooting for this guy to bomb - and I think he'll have a rather subpar season. I go East: 1. Boston 2. Philly 3. Bucks 4. Indy 5. Toronto...... I'm actually rooting for Kawhi to have success in Toronto and perhaps make the finals (unless of course it keeps the Sixers out) so he maybe decides to stay and not go to the Lakers.

This isn't new. Steve Francis forced his way out of Vancouver in 1999 before ever playing an NBA game. I've been a sports fan my whole life and I've never understood why professional athletes are treated like cattle. Imagine your boss called you into his office tomorrow and told you he traded your services to a company in Anchorage. Would you go? I think all players should have to agree to trades before they happen, and I'll take things a step farther. Eliminate the draft. We have a salary cap to keep the playing field even, let players play where they want to play. If the best offer is with Cleveland then eventually the good player will choose Cleveland over whatever minimum salary is on the table in Los Angeles. The system is rigged in favor of the best teams in college and it's entirely up to the player where they want to play, yet we balk at professionals who want to choose the best situation for themselves? I don't understand it and I never will. Well they have to have a league where every team has an equal chance to win. A sports league has to be supported by a fan base. And a fan in Utah has to have a reason to watch too or the league dies. Free agency in general is bad for that. Why would a fan in Utah or Toronto watch when players don't want to play for their team? Your college example is a great illustration of how that works. The overwhelming majority of colleges have no chance to win a championship. It's a flawed system for competition. I'm all for players being paid...they earn it. That's why we watch. But I'm a fan so I also balk at the idea that the interests of fans don't matter. We are literally the only branch of the sports trinity (owners, players, fans) who are expected to be "loyal". The owners and players can treat the fans like crap and that's not a problem. Only fans are expected to care about the interests of the other two branches. Owners and players act in their interest first. Employees everywhere are "treated like cattle" if you term it that way. Does a person who works for Walmart or Bank of America get to change to a different branch without permission? Of course not. The company would be in chaos if that happened. So I'm not a fan of free agency in the first place. But I also like that players get the money they deserve. The salary cap makes that a problem though. Teams have to make choices every year that are not in the best interest of winning because of the salary cap. If there is a way to make it fair to fans, pay the players, and keep the league healthy I'm all for that. But I'm not about to put the fans last on that list. You always have the option of not being a fan. I stepped away from baseball for 14 years.

College sports aren't based on regional loyalty, they're based on winning. Do you think all Duke fans are from North Carolina? All NY Yankees fans are from New York? The collegiate system isn't fair to the fans and they show up anyway, this was my point. I realize the winning teams get all the fans in college. I brought that one up actually. That's what happens when smaller teams don't have an equal shot at winning. Well let's use that logic on the players. It "isn't fair" to the players...and yet they line up to be drafted. The majority of them don't bother with a free education in order to try for a job in this alleged "unfair" system. Why would they do that? Doesn't sound like it's that unfair to me given the behavior of the players. They even have the perfect opportunity to use their college scholarships to train for a different high paying field and avoid this alleged servitude. As I pointed out, occupations all over the world pay people to inconvenience themselves. Some high paying jobs do that because people actually risk their lives doing the job (oil rigs, coal miners). People are always free to quit those high paying jobs for something that appeals to them more. No one is forcing these players to enter these fields. The only reason they have those "specific skills" is because they dedicate years to perfecting them....all to chase the "dream" (that's how players term it) of playing for these leagues you claim aren't fair. I don't think anyone ever spent that much time and effort to work for a bank. It's a choice at every step of the way and players choose to play for various sports leagues. They literally spend years to get there. It's only ludicrous if you term it that way. You left out the part where you got a free education of your choice just because you are a promising banker. That would allow you to do much more than work at a gas station if you thought it wasn't fair that you were a "commodity" at your bank branch. Athletes have much more choice than anyone else because of those "specific skills". They instead choose to work for a sports league that must maintain a competitive balance that allows small market teams to have a shot at winning. The Kings actually did have a contender in the early 2000s if you remember. They may have a championship from that if not for that questionable 2002 playoff thing with the refs. The Kings would never have put together a contending team if players went where they wanted. You can forget about the Jazz, Spurs, Timberwolves, OKC, Pacers, Cavs, etc ever winning anything either. You may as well get rid of the teams in those markets. The fans would have no reason to watch their team exist just to be fodder for the "important" teams. Sure....in places like Pittsburgh and Green Bay in the NFL. Those dynasties never would have happened if the players could go where they wanted. And as a Celtics fan, you'd better be glad players like Bill Russell didn't have a choice to leave. Boston was not a pleasant place to be for black players and that rep would have killed any shot at a Celtics dynasty. And you never would have gotten Bird either...he would have probably gone to the Pacers and spent his career losing there. As I said, of course anyone wants as much as they can get whether or not it is good for the industry they work for. I don't think it's crazy at all. First because the players would have far more options than you claim if the league was thought of as "unfair". They certainly wouldn't spend years training for it and forgo all other training for other fields in college. So the players' behavior really defeats your argument. My fan perspective is my fan perspective. Players and owners don't care about the fans at all so asking fans to put their needs aside in favor of the players is not logical. You aren't making the case why fans should put the players desires ahead of their own. If you aren't trying to do that then we have no reason to quibble over it. Fans put themselves first just like the players do. Free agency is certainly not helping the NBA spread the wealth today. A 73 win team picked up the 2nd best player in the world and can't be beaten. OKC... The Cavs? Their one and only hope is the draft. How about we pretend each team is a separate entity instead of a league? That would be necessary to make your claim work. The draft is out obviously. Each team sets their own schedule. I guess they would have to negotiate with other teams. The Lakers would just skip playing teams like the Cavs, Wizards, and Hawks....no one wants to see that. Do they play 82 games or 102? Who knows? Do the Lakers hire their own refs and make their own rules? Maybe they don't think it should be against the rules to hand check. Goaltending wouldn't be called against the Lakers either in their gym. Perfectly legal. The Dallas Mavs could change their uniforms as often as they like. Oh....and Mark Cuban can spend as money as he wants. I'll bet he would love to just hire half the Celtics roster. There are pretty good reasons why the league is a single entity and makes these rules that all teams have to abide by.

You always have the option of not being a fan. I stepped away from baseball for 14 years. Agreed. Lots of sports fans are choosing not to be fans of the NBA and MLB. MLB is in serious trouble. Their fan base gets one year older every year. And it's ludicrous that the NBA isn't more popular. They've had the most popular athletes on the planet over the past 30 years. I stopped watching the NBA myself for a few years after that absurd 2006 Finals. The stink of corruption was too much to take.

The game just is too slow for this generation. Now dont get me wrong, I enjoy MLB playoffs (Last year for obvious reasons, but truth is I always have) but the season...is too too long. Im an 80s child. Im sure for those of you who were had dads, and a lot of our dads listen to the game on the radio, watched it, maybe had a beer, a snack, and would watch the game. Younger generation doesnt do that. They watch football and basketball. Basketball is a lot more fast paced, 89 to 95. Baseball can end in a 1-0 game. (FUN ONE RUN!) I admit I still watch NBA but it is growing tiring. Seriously, is anyone not penciling in GSW for another title? Anyone?

I agree, and they got themselves a nice little piece in Schroder. Id even consider doing sort of what the Rockets do with Harden/CP3. Play Westbrook at PG and Schroder at SG (Can go vice versa). Dont put the ball in Westbrooks hand 24/7. Let Schroder do some action. Brook and George playing off the ball, and you got to respect Dennis. Hey, Id take Dennis > Melo, straight up. He's what I call high risk, high reward. Melo at this point is high risk, low reward in his career. bleacherreport.com/articles/2786930-thunder-identity-taking-shape-as-okc-flips-carmelo-for-high-risk-high-reward-pg"Dennis Schroder ranked 6th in the NBA creating, assisting, or scoring 17.2 points per game out of the pick & roll season, just behind Russell Westbrook, who finished 5th at 19.9 per game." It does sound he will play 6th man, and Im not saying he is a savior, but I think he is an underrated asset no one is discussing here.

Kawhi Leonard didn't want to go to the LAKERS, He wanted to go to the CLIPPERS. I could actually see that happening. With so many ppl dissecting him this week, many have agreed that he wasn't programmed to follow the Robinson-Duncan face of the franchise line in San Antonio. Duncan was quiet but he wasn't recluse, after timeouts he'd throw his arm over guys shoulders in solidarity. Raptors are playing with house money. DeRozan has done nothing in the playoffs & their youth need better chi in the spring. Insanity is expecting different results with the same recipe. As I mentioned somewhere else, he may even dramatically miss his chemistry with Lowry on the Spurs - that stuff isn't in stats to see. Best hope is Kawhi plays the season out & realizes Toronto already has one of the better young cores in the entire league. He won't need to be a mascot if he doesn't wanna be. VanVleet is already on the trajectory of being the face of the Raps. See if he like Paul George (also shying from spotlight) realizes the grass isn't always greener, & re-signs. He'll see within 4 minutes that we also don't all live in igloos or require 16hr flights to NYC.

Sure, but nobody is complaining. Duke fans in New Jersey don't care that Duke isn't in New Jersey, so it isn't regional, as you suggested. And again, division 1 is filled with teams that have no shot at winning a national title but the fans still go to the games. Your commentary on the draft is puzzling. Players 'line up' for the draft because there is no other option, this is the point I've been making. And please don't tell me they can go work at the convenience store if they don't like it, that logic has no place in this discussion.
No it wouldn't. Allowing players to play where they wanted to play would not require dissolving the league, tearing up the rule book or anything else you've presented in this bizarre scenario. All you'd really need to do is enforce a hard salary cap. The Warriors core isn't going stay intact forever, free agency will make sure of that. The 1960s Celtics didn't have to worry about free agency and they were unbeatable, even more so than the Warriors of today. All the league could do was wait for Russell to retire. In the 90s, all the league could do was wait for Jordan to retire. Basketball is about talent, perhaps more than any other sport. How a team acquires that talent is what's being discussed here, and I think players should have more say.
The great players are going to want to cash in, and with a hard salary cap there's only so much cash to go around. A super team isn't going to last forever, certainly no longer than the dynasties of the draft era have lasted. And I'd say free agency worked out pretty well for the Heat a few years back. And then the players moved on, allowing the rise of another champion-- all thanks to free agency.
Once more, fans still go to games. There isn't an NBA team operating in the red. Toronto, Indiana, the Clippers; these teams have never won anything and people still go to the games, large or small market. Across all of sports, fans go to games whether their team is a contender or not. As a fan, you can't expect anything other than a solid effort from your club. Forcing players to waste their entire careers in poorly run organizations doesn't help the players, the game itself, or the fans.
We're talking in circles here and I don't understand where you're coming from with a lot of this stuff. I don't mean to condescend; I've had great basketball conversations with you in the past. I just don't think we're ever going to see eye to eye so we'll have to agree to disagree. It's ultimately a non-issue as I don't expect the draft or free agency to go anywhere anytime soon.
