While I can see people have came up with plenty of negative things to say about it... I think it's more good than bad as we got access to information very quick that would be a chore to obtain without it. basically people can obtain information much quicker which I can't see how that's a bad thing. plus, even in terms of politics etc... without the internet things would be a lot more controlled by those in power in radio/TV/newspapers. the internet takes away power from those people which cannot be a bad thing. sure, the internet can be abused though and can do some great harm but it's not a bad thing outright. p.s. some people just tend to see negative in everything and that's not a good mindset to have as while there is a lot of negativity out there, there is still plenty of positive stuff. focus more on the positive stuff in general if you can as things will tend to be better for you in general that way MCDemuthThat's not surprising because online for most of the stuff I get (usually computer tech stuff) you can get a better deal than if you found it locally and not only that you just sit back and with a few clicks you wait for your item. it's just nice and convenient and offers better prices. about the only time more of a local place would be better is if your more likely to need to exchange a item or if exchanging the item would be a pain in the butt like if it's a heavier item like a TV etc. enigma72Yep. that's one of the biggest problems with the internet as it makes it easy for people to access something that's outright immoral that before the internet age was not as easy to come by. but now it's super easy for anyone to obtain and for free. pornography etc is against God and is a serious sin. but even for those who don't believe in God... I am sure they can look up all of the studies on it which further confirm it's bad.

I am sure they can look up all of the studies on it which further confirm it's bad. I agree with everything you have said except; 1) I think buying clothes is better in person (local stores and shops) because you can try them on right there. The Internet purchases, you cannot really see until they arrive at your house. And if they don't look or fit right, you have to ship them back. I could see how somebody could get used to online shopping. But if you have the time, and you like people, shopping at "brick and mortar" stores and shops is more fun and immediate. 2) I don't agree all porn is bad. I think "abuse" of porn is bad. I think if used properly, porn is good and healthy for individuals and society. We don't want a world were everyone is ignorant about sex, prudish about sex, or where everyone thinks sex is a disgusting, necessary evil. Pornography --- when used correctly --- educates and brings great joy to people.

movielikerI actually agree with you here. with clothes it is better to get them locally unless you happen to know certain things will fit well without trying them on etc. so we don't disagree here, we actually agree. also, as for shopping locally with it being fun etc... I kind of see that more of a female thing as they tend to go into a store looking around at random crap to buy (or go into there for something they want but then come out with other crap to etc) where as us guys tend to get what we went there for in the first place and then we leave the place. We will naturally disagree here because porn goes against God (porn is ALWAYS wrong/sinful for those taking part in it and those viewing it etc). but that's our core difference here is I believe in God where as you do not and it's not surprising that for someone who does not believe in Jesus Christ will think porn is okay (or not outright bad (even though it is)) because it looks appealing on the surface. also, I think that's one thing people always say about those of us in religion that people think sex is disgusting and the like. basically to sum it up... sex is fine within legitimate marriage but outside of that it's not and is always sinful. but porn is ALWAYS bad(it's a serious sin), period. I realize you won't agree with that but for those who believe in Jesus Christ (who's God), that's the truth. also, it seems there are quite a few in porn who are hooked on drugs etc. trust me(I doubt you will though), porn is outright bad. also, sex is not outright evil as anyone who thinks that cannot possibly be correct... because if no one has sex, humanity would cease to exist. so common sense tells you that sex can't be outright evil and there must at least be certain occasions it's okay/good. basically... sex, when used properly in relation to how God designed it, is actually a good thing. but the sexual desire is something people tend to abuse and abuse A LOT and that's where things turn bad. but for someone who does not believe in God and the truth that humanity no longer see's right and wrong properly after the fall of Adam/Eve, just won't see things this way, as they won't believe in the truth that sin exists and it has consequences.

movieliker Agreed. but once in a great while I might order a shirt online vs getting it locally. but in general getting stuff in person locally is better than online because you can see if it fits well etc. It's nice to see you believe in God [ ] as I just kind of assumed you did not given God's not popular around here because most are of the atheist/liberal/worldly mindset. but anyways to answer your question... The Ten Commandments... "Thou shalt not commit adultery." a quote from the bible... "but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart." - Matthew 5:28 and that's basically just fantasizing about it etc in your mind/heart (i.e. what many refer to as 'impure thoughts'(although it can be more than just sexual stuff even though that's probably the most common thing in relation to 'impure thoughts')). so one can get in hot water with God right there but porn takes things even further(i.e. is even worse) than that. trust me, God (i.e. The Holy Trinity(Father/Son(Jesus Christ)/Holy Spirit)) is against porn 100%. or to quote some stuff from from the Catechism of the Catholic church (which is official teachings of the Catholic church which is the church Jesus Christ started with Peter (who's the first pope basically) and went through the generations til today)... CCC #2351... "Lust is disordered desire for or inordinate enjoyment of sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure is morally disordered when sought for itself, isolated from its procreative and unitive purposes." CCC #2352... "By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 "The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose." For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved." CCC #2353... "Fornication is carnal union between an unmarried man and an unmarried woman. It is gravely contrary to the dignity of persons and of human sexuality which is naturally ordered to the good of spouses and the generation and education of children. Moreover, it is a grave scandal when there is corruption of the young." CCC #2354... " Pornography consists in removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners, in order to display them deliberately to third parties. It offends against chastity because it perverts the conjugal act, the intimate giving of spouses to each other. It does grave injury to the dignity of its participants (actors, vendors, the public), since each one becomes an object of base pleasure and illicit profit for others. It immerses all who are involved in the illusion of a fantasy world. It is a grave offense. Civil authorities should prevent the production and distribution of pornographic materials." NOTE: 'grave offense' is serious sin (there is three things required for a mortal sin(serious sin) to truly occur but I won't get into this for now. but objectively porn is a serious sin.) which some refer to in the Catholic church as 'mortal sin' and if someone dies in a state of mortal sin when they pass from this life... you end up in hell (i.e. suffering beyond comprehension as the suffering there is far worse than anything one can possibly experience in this world, and it's for eternity) and there is no getting out of there as it's for eternity. that's what confession is for in the Catholic church if someone falls into serious sin that's the typical way one is forgiven by God (there is other extraordinary ways etc one can be forgiven outside of confession but I would not count on those as confession is the only safe way to be forgiven by God if one is truly in a state of mortal sin). but... one has to have a firm purpose of amendment to stop those serious sins as if one goes into confession with no real desire to stop committing serious sin the confession is not valid and you just make things even worse on yourself etc. confession also gives us grace from God to help resist sin etc. NOTE: there are two types of sin... venial sin(mild sin) and mortal sin(serious sin). venial sin only hurts your relationship with God, but your still in union with Him(i.e. you can't end up in hell when you die), where as mortal sin completely destroys it (i.e. your cut off from God and if one dies in this state you end up in hell(but you can get back into union with God, before you die, through confession etc which restores sanctifying grace within ones soul)).
bottom line... messing around with porn etc, puts one at risk of hell when they pass from this life into the next.
with all of that said... if your thinking it's impossible to resist porn/lust etc, regular prayer (i.e. I highly recommend praying The Holy Rosary daily) gives you grace from God to resist sin. without that, your pretty much screwed. but like I always say... I suspect many Christians think regular prayer is optional, but it's not. it's required if one is going to grow closer to God and resist the temptations of the world etc. something I found online in relation to prayer... St. Alphonsus Liguori coined a famous, very elementary maxim, which states: “He who prays is saved. He who prays not is damned!” Commenting on this lapidary statement, he added: “To save one’s soul without prayer is most difficult, and even impossible … but by praying our salvation is made secure, and very easy” (Chapter II, Conclusion). And he goes on to say: “If we do not pray, we have no excuse, for the grace of prayer is given to everyone … if we are not saved, the whole fault will be ours, because we did not pray" ; so with that said... the importance of regular(daily) prayer cannot be stressed enough! sorry for the novel, but I wanted to be fairly thorough p.s. the source of those CCC(Catechism of the Catholic Church) quotes = www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a6.htm ; which is right from the Vatican's website.

Although I know online is sometimes better. Like when you know what you want (I buy my Crocs online). Or when you cannot find what you want locally. I am happy online shopping for clothes is available. But usually shopping in person is better. (It is probably wonderful for those who live out in the country or in small towns.) 2) Who wrote all those rules and condemnations concerning sex, fornication and porn? I assume it was men. Not God or Jesus Christ (or the Holy Spirit). Who is to say whoever wrote those rules and condemnations knows better than you or I do? I never saw anywhere in the Bible where God or Jesus said anything about going to Hell over sex or porn. As a matter of fact, the prostitute Jesus palled around with (Mary Magdalene), I don't remember him telling her she was going to Hell. And if I am not mistaken, man created the institutions of marriage and church. Not God or Jesus. Most of human history, men and women just hooked up. And often, men had more than one wife. No, those rules are man made. Made by men who want to tell others how to live. God and Jesus only care about being honest, considerate, and trustworthy (and responsible) concerning relationships. I don't believe there was even any porn around when Jesus walked the Earth. Or when the Bible was written.

A while ago you were happy that there were no trolls/idiots on this thread. Then you come into a perfectly respectful conversation and start calling people names and discriminating against them based on religious beliefs. There was a fine discussion going on before you decided to shove bigotry into it. Hopefully they will feel free to continue their discussion regardless.

It seems his brainwash is very deeply rooted. No, I am not new. I have just never had the pleasure of talking religion with Mr. Slovak. uhhh... this twit is notorious for bringing HIS religion into topics and threads where religion was not the topic in question. he has been indeed brainwashed about his religion and does not see the world for the cruel reality it is. I find it hard to believe that you have not seen ONE post from Slovak regarding religion. and its not about changing his ways [the road goes both ways] but he DOES HAVE TO UNDERSTAND that his religion is not THE ONLY religion in existence [haha - his religion is piggybacking on an even older religion!] and he has to understand that when on the world wide web, you do have to keep your religious feelings to yourself mostly. its not about you. [religion never is]

movieliker... The Internet allows us to communicate, share information, ideas, opinions, etc. more effectively and efficiently. One reason technology and life are progressing more quickly than ever before is the Internet. It will allow us to achieve more, faster than ever before in human history.
Good points and as I said earlier .. we have the potential and the opportunity to communicate and share information and interests with people from all around the world BUT take a look at the "thread" titles and see what we are doing with this potential. Starting a day off reading the Politics or General Discussion Boards with " adults" fighting, bickering, juvenile name calling and comparing how and when they "fap" … it's discouraging to say the least. There are roses among the weeds... just have to be patient and watch for them !

Harm. I have become depressed over this insane amount of porn not being available to me at 14 years old. Aspiring teenagers don't know how bad we had it.

It also gives bullies an avenue to be mean to people for no reason in complete anonymity with no consequences. This was a pretty good thread for a while and then name calling interrupted an interesting conversation between two members who were getting along just fine despite having differing opinions. Seems rather a shame to be mean just to be mean.

There is no one right answer to the question posed in the OP. It's a matter of perspectives. My answer is that it has done a lot more good to me than harm. 1. Internet helped me pass examinations as I had access to youtube videos and other study tools for free. 2. I learned cooking from youtube when I was student living away from my home. F&D board members of old IMDB also encouraged me a lot in the initial days when I started cooking. I would not have learned to make Thai cuisines and Italian cuisines and Ethopian food if there was no internet. 3. Internet message boards helped me get entertainment and made me aware of many different kinds of music. Without internet I would not have got access to music from Armenia and Persia. 4. A lot of movies on public domain are available on internet for free. I guess I would not have seen so many movies without internet. 5. I understand life more now because I can interact with people from all over the world and know a lot of things about cultures of various countries. 6. Sports. You get endless sports on internet. I would never have paid attention to NBA and other American sports if not for internet. Now I am in love with basketball and I derive happiness from it. 7. I am in finance industry and internet helps me increase my knowledge in my field .
8. I can talk to my mother living in northern hemisphere 1000s of miles away from me free of cost. It would have cost a lot to talk daily to her if not for internet.
I can go on and on......Yeah, there may be harmful side of it. But like with other things, it is up to humans to pick what they want from anything....

The POTENTAIL for good is there but on the down side :
Now the evil and crazies can find out how to make a bomb and poisons that could wipe out populations without even having to bother going to a library to get the information.
Stealing Credit cards, social security numbers and identities is possible thanks to "technical advances".
Whole companies can be held for ransom via Viruses.
Rumors and innuendo which spread instantly can affect the governments of nations
School yard bullies can really gang up on the vulnerable without even the risk of being found out until it is too late.
etc

In general, with a few important exceptions, I think it has done long term cultural and societal harm for the sake of short term convenience and entertainment. Well said. 👍

At first it seemed like Brave New World. The first and ONLY time in the history of humanity that the average schmoo had access to real, true free speech to say whatever the hell they wanted, printed in cyberspace for all to see. Then slowly but surely the corporate meatball began to creep in spreading it's evil tentacles of hatred and censorship enacting various leveling mechanisms in an attempt to monetize the internet. Now we have this - perverse spectacle of human foibles and mental masturbation. It was fun while it lasted. Those were the days brah. 😞
