Glad to say I missed out on the Betamax debacle. Same with MiniDisc and HD DVD. Normally I'm years behind the curve and let things get established before I buy anything.

I still have three bushel sized boxes with Beta Movies waiting for a chance to give them to a good home. The player finally completely gave up the ghost this spring after a long and successful run.

Not many. They were pricey back then. But I did have Apocalypse Now and Elvis's '68 Comeback Special.

I would imagine most around here are too young to remember that format as while I can remember it, it's barely and ill be 39 years old later this year.
my dad has a beta player the last I knew but it collects dust. but I remember those a bit in I want to say roughly the late 1980's (maybe a little into the 1990's). but I can remember VHS quite well since that lasted for quite a while as I think, from what I read online a while ago, that DVD rentals overtook VHS in the year 2003. so VHS was still quite popular you could say at least into the early 2000's but it was mainly a 1990's thing(maybe 1980's to some degree), give or take a little. so while wikipedia says Sep 1976 for VHS, I am sure it was many years after that before it came affordable for the common person which I would guesstimate to be roughly late 1980's on up before the more common person started to have them. looks like the beta market share was pretty small by the late 1980's checking wikipedia quickly.

anthonyrocksYeah, in general it's always best to wait til prices etc become reasonable before buying general tech especially in those cases of a format war as if your on the losing side you can get burned like with HDDVD etc. p.s. even with general computer tech I tend to always wait for prices to become reasonable as it makes no sense shelling out top dollar for crap that will cost much less in a year or two etc. that's why I waited as long as I did before getting a SSD for my main computer (which I got in May 2015) as that's around the time quality SSD's (and my 250GB MINIMUM standard(as for a main PC it's simply not worth buying anything smaller than this if one does anything more than basic internet with their PC like games etc)) sold for reasonable prices. nowadays... for the price I paid for my SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 250GB(which is still a solid drive to this day)) in May 2015 you can get SSD's double the storage space for the same price or a bit less than what I paid 3+ years ago.
