Prototaxites were imposing, one-metre-thick, 8-metre-tall fungus/lichen dildo-like growths that dominated the Earth’s landscape before trees had fully evolved and before vertebrates had left the oceans. Existing for approximately 70 million years until the end of the Devonian era, it was the tallest land-dwelling organism of its time. They went extinct well over 100 million years before the first dinosaurs showed up. Examinations of Prototaxites fossils have shown evidence of insect bore marks, perhaps part of the reason why they didn't survive. Eventually, they were superseded by trees, which flourished in the following era, the Carboniferous. Interestingly, trees had something that Prototaxites didn't: bark.

Can you imagine the complaints home owners would get from offended neighbors if they could grow these in their front lawns today?
Especially if children were to place a couple of basket 'balls' next to them...
