Wasn't it rumoured that Walt Disney sided with the Nazi's? Apocryphal at best. There's an interesting article by Paste Magazine about this.

It's understandable in today's social climate why they parted ways with Gunn, but it sucks that today's social climate is what it is. Even if Gunn weren't doing humor, it sucks that we have a society where people would protest, boycott, etc., just because someone said something that they don't agree with.

It's a rehashed controversy but more people are paying attention this time. Disney is well within their rights to get rid of a guy who is making the company look bad. Any business would do this. The sad part is that the only people paying attention to this are the ones that know him and will still go see his Guardians 3 anyway and the ones against the company that may or may not see the movie depending on their spite. Most people don't care about this. The ones that get outraged about this will forget when it goes out of the news cycle. So yesterday. That's why I think James Gunn will survive this controversy. I understand why Disney parted ways with him to avoid scrutiny, but bad jokes are not an unforgiveable sin. He'll get a second chance, whether it's with Disney is questionable though.

Fantasia had an unattractive looking black centaur named Sunflower polishing the hoof of a white blondish centaur. It was later removed. The Aristocats had a Siamese cat who scats in his native tongue and then uses a cymbal as a conical hat. Song of the South Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, bitches! I have seen the movie, and it's not at all racist. The crux of the story is a boy who befriends and listens to stories told by Uncle Remus. Perhaps, the movie could be have more clear that it was set during Reconstuction, but it gets an unfair reputation.

Perhaps, the movie could be have more clear that it was set during Reconstuction, but it gets an unfair reputation. I have seen the movie as well and, while it is not overtly racist, the Uncle Remus character does undoubtedly come from the minstrel tradition and is cringe-worthy as such. When I first saw the movie, I was unaware of its reputation, and it was unclear to me when it was taking place - before or after slavery ended in the US. To this day, I can't remember which is the case. A title card would have helped in this regard. Either way, there is something subtly insidious about the film in its implication that slavery might have been an agreeable experience which lacked any real peril or consequences. Uncle Remus acts as if slavery was not unlike a pleasant nap or forgettable vacation. I will admit that I have not seen the film in several years.
