Apparently not. Apparently everything is caused by "trolls" and "toxic fans" who forced Gunn to write a collection of rape and pedophilia jokes over several years. Who knew?!

I mean, I think what he said is fairly straightforward. He doesn’t believe he ever tweeted anything as bad as what Gunn tweeted, but he deleted those tweets as a precaution in case he ever did say something stupid that would be used as ammunition against him. If he had tweets joking about child rape, I’d assume that someone would’ve uncovered them by now, considering what a pariah he’s become among the fanbase.

Translation: "I wrote tweets that could potentially cost me a job down the line" He should own up to it. Again, I would think that if he tweeted anything on the level of what Gunn tweeted, they would’ve resurfaced by now. Rian Johnson is a much more polarizing figure than James Gunn ever was, so you can bet that there would’ve been people just itching to dig up dirt on him. I don’t really see what there is to own up to.

Except for the last part where he blames Gunn being fired on some "trolls" instead of where the real problem rests, which is Gunn. It was Gunn who got himself fired - not anyone else. The fact that he blames it on "trolls" again (much like the criticism of Episode 8) just shows how badly he can't admit the truth about things. Now for some Public Service Announcements as people can't seem to grasp they should think before they post to their personal social media accounts...

Gunn had publicly apologized for his old tweets and blog posts back in 2012. People like Mike Cernovich dug up his old tweets specifically because they were mad that he’s not a Trump supporter.

there is no indication whatsoever that he is depraved like Gunn is (but then, who is?).
But as with most businesses, insulting the customer base (justified or not) will likely get you fired as deemed unprofessional and not furthering the business interests. That applies even more to franchise fanbases.
And we know that he is very guilty of that. So, this is a pretty smart move of his if not too late.

Mike Cernovich didn't force Gunn to write anything. If Gunn was really sorry back in 2012, he would have deleted the Tweets and not kept them on his personal account for another 6 years. The world is bigger than Trump and his supporters (it's bigger than America too). People really don't care who people vote for - only the media does with their 24/7 "breaking news" monster. Don't mistake media outlets' hysteria with real, grounded people.

No. Mike Cernovich definitely is a troll, and he and his followers definitely had an agenda in mind when they resurfaced Gunn’s old tweets. The majority of people may not care who people vote for, but Cernovich and his followers definitely do.

The majority of people may not care who people vote for, but Cernovich and his followers definitely do. Okay, let's say he's a troll. He still didn't make Gunn make those postings on his personal account or keep them on his account all this time. People have to be held accountable for their own actions. I know people like Rian Johnson want to point fingers at everyone else, but actions have consequences. Disney is a huge corporation that has made their money gearing their content towards children. They can't keep someone employed who has publicly stated the kind of things Gunn has. No way. Regardless of him apologizing, they can't keep him on anymore. Disney is already in the process of the Fox acquisition, a brand that is starting to show signs of cracks (i.e. Solo, merchandising sales, a discontented fan base, etc.) that they're already building a huge theme park for, a failed Muppet TV show...they can't really have take anymore risks without negatively impacting and ticking off their shareholders. It's way less of a headache for them to just drop Gunn.

It's way less of a headache for them to just drop Gunn. There’s no “let’s say” about it. Cernovich is a rape apologist who nearly got convicted for rape. Cernovich has promoted a conspiracy theory that nearly got the owner of a pizza joint killed. He previously tried to get Sam Seder fired because of an out of context tweet about Roman Polanski. He delights in “owning the libs”. He didn’t resurface those tweets over some sense of moral righteousness. He resurfaced them specifically because he wanted to get one up on a left leaning figure in Hollywood. Besides, Disney and Marvel already knew the kind of person James Gunn was when they hired him. The point is, Rian Johnson is right about these people being trolls. Contrary to what you might like to believe, trolls do exist, and rapists like Mike Cernovich definitely qualify as trolls.

Oh, I don't claim otherwise. However, to fall back on blaming everything on "trolls" is a lame and weak argument. Apparently, when in doubt, just blame trolls! Your boss being hard on you? Blame trolls. Accidentally break something in your home? Blame trolls. Get a flat tire? Blame trolls. Yippee!

You're both correct.
James Gunn is at fault for originally writing the tweets and acting like a teenage edgelord.
Mike is a troll with an agenda. He only went after Gunn because James Gunn said some mean things about his Senpai Trump. Mike is also the same jackass that pushed the pizzagate conspiracy that literally nearly killed an innocent man.
Both of them are stupid assholes, unfortunately only James Gunn suffered the consequences and Mike didn't. At least not yet.

In Rian Johnson’s case, I’m not sure why him implying that people with agendas would try to use his tweets against him is a wrong thing to suggest. As far as we know, he hasn’t tweeted anything anywhere on the level of what James Gunn tweeted. He simply deleted his tweets just in case he ever said something stupid that people might try to use to attack him with. He apparently didn’t even look for specific tweets to delete. He just went ahead and deleted everything he tweeted prior to the current year. That means that plenty of the tweets he deleted were simply inoffensive tweets of him promoting TLJ.

Because he blames everything on "trolls" and "toxic fans" (as he puts it). Weak merchandising sales? All due to trolls. Strong criticism of Episode 8? All due to trolls who "can't stand people of color and strong women from being represented" (despite Princess Leia being loved for 40+ years by Star Wars fans...). Solo doing poorly at the box office? All due to trolls. People being held accountable and removed from powerful positions? All due to trolls. It's enough already.
