Alex Honnold is an amazing rock climber. He scales 2000 foot walls with no rope. That is roughly the height of a 200 story building, taller than any building in the entire United States, taller than the Empire State Building, The Sears Tower, and the new World Trade Center in New York. It is the peak test of climbing, but the question is, is it a test of skill and overcoming fear, or an exercise in wreckless disregard for one's own life.
In some way I highly respect the accomplishment, as it is something I would never even attempt, and admire it for the determination, it's incredible skill, and simply the process of overcoming the elements involved.
On the other hand, I do not understand the risk. Take another highly skilled athlete like a gymnast. Would we respect gymnasts more if they risked their lives and perhaps performed over pits of razor sharp spears? Would we respect archers for shooting apples off of people's heads? Would we prefer the UFC if it was actually fights to the death? Why do we glorify this type of high risk climbing when there is no need for the risk at all? The same route could be climbed with at least some level of safety, so why exclude it?
What do you think?

They are experts in weapons whereas the normal person may not know a thing. What?

I don't see the bravery in these climbs.

The interesting thing is not many people know the difference between stupid and brave! SOUNDS STUPID RIGHT! BUT ITS TRUE! A man soilder runs out in the open to drag the wounder comrade to safety or to charge the enemy machine nest holding them down 200 meters away. Is he stupid or brave? If he makes it HES BRAVE, if he gets killed HES STUPID! Logically its always stupid, which is how I view it! The outcome can be viewed Stupid or Brave!

Stupid, stupid, stupid!
All it takes is one slip for sudden death. Maybe this is society's way of weeding out people like the guy in the video.

i voted for Stupid etc overall as it seems like a unnecessary risk. but with that said... i can kinda see why they do it in a way, because i might increase the thrill for them doing it with no net. because i imagine with increased risk they might get more adrenaline/thrill from it and some might partially like the fame they can get from it since if a audience is watching it makes it a bit more interesting knowing that if they fall they are screwed vs if they got a net. still, outside of the added thrill angle it just seems like there is a point where risk becomes too great of a threat to your life and you got to draw the line somewhere as it's just not worth the added risk for the slight increase in thrill etc. i just hope those into that sorta of thing don't have a family of which i expect most probably don't because if say those guys had a wife and kids that would seem sorta irresponsible to risk their life like that with no safety net. it might be kinda like some people who get all upset when people go really fast and think it's stupid etc but those people don't see the adrenaline side of things as that's a great feeling/rush going really fast on a motorcycle for example. so this might sorta apply to that whole rock climbing without any support thing in some way. just some thoughts

"I like your point but think about Normandy thou" Where they stupid or brave? Actually when you are there do you have a choice? either get out of the landing vehicle to reduce your chance of being killed (neither brave or stupid). Do you view getting out of dangerous to a less dangerous situation as brave?

Neither. Though if they fall off a skyscraper & land on a bunch of school kids, then yeah, I'd say that's pretty f'n reckless.

Stupid.
However I do feel people fighting each other to death for fun is a great idea. A much better idea than no rope solo climbing.

I think it's reckless.
The tightrope walking that the guy did between the Twin Towers a long time ago was without protection and it makes me sick just to think about it.
He survived but it still makes me sick.
I saw the movie about it and the whole think made me feel queasy.
